Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Sync with a Windows Mobile PDA?

Has anyone figured out a way to synchronize a few tables with a Pocket PC? I'm a landlord and am trying to bring my maintenance records and address list with me in my AT&T Tilt. It runs Window Mobile 6. I've tried PocketDB Viewer+ but it does not sync in both directions and can't handle memo fields. I have also struggled with HandDbase but have never gotten it to work at all.

I'd appreciate any suggestions. I'd REALLY appreciate a solution!

    Thanks,
    James

Check out the following links. With V9 what you are looking to do is easily possible with V9 and a product called Visual CE by Syware. With V9 you can create Active Link tables to the data actually sitting on the mobile device while it is docked since Syware provides and ODBC driver to the mobile tables. Very Cool.

    Or more recently with V9:

Later: You should probably post questions like this in the desktop area of the forum since. While you can enter/edit data to tables that can be synced to a PDA via a web front end - this probably has more relevance in the desktop area.

Re: Sync with a Windows Mobile PDA?

        Hi Again Jeff,

I've upgraded to A5 V9, downloaded and installed (on trial basis) Syware Visual CE. Now I'm kind of stuck. What are the steps I need to take to get my Address and todo dbf files onto my PDA and synced with my desktop? Lost in jargons and acronyms but not giving up. (Sounds like the name of a New Wave band.)

Do I have to configure something in A5 first or can it all be done from Visual CE?

        Thanks,

        James

Re: Sync with a Windows Mobile PDA?

          Hi James

Sorry for the delay. I was gone for a couple days and things have been crazy.

It sounds like you already have your address and todo in written Alpha.

You need to download the odbc for foxpro from the Visual CE (Syware) site. This will allow the handheld to communicate with the Alpha (Foxpro) tables.

When you set up your sync parameters in Visual CE you can choose the Alpha (dbf) tables instead of the native DB Visual CE uses. You must have their special ODBC driver from above though for it to work properly.

You will want to make sure that your Visual CE Handheld app contains fields that correlate to the fields in your Alpha tables.

I would also make sure that when you go to sync that you are completely out of Alpha just to make sure there are no record / table locking issues.

One word on syncing...they offer several options like:

          Handheld overwrites desktop
          Desktop overwrites handheld
          Sync

As I recall there are some others too - so just try to get a handle on how you want the sync to operate.

Make sure you have a good backup of you main data when you are testing things just to make sure you don't lose anything inadvertantly or something gets changed by mistake.

          Hope that helps some....

          Jeff
