Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    having to resort

Each time I open my data base I have to do a quick resort. Is there a way of preventing this TIA

    Re: having to resort

It sounds like you are doing the re-sort manually right now and want it to be automatically done???

If so, then tell Alpha to do just that with an Action Script using Index/Sort... and then choose however you want to do this on the right hand screen and allow the genies to help you. Normally this Action Script would be placed on either the OnInit or OnActivate events of a form...but you did not say where the sorting is wanted so just a guess.

        Re: having to resort

I will need even more info to help.

It sounds like you do not have forms open---are you simply using default forms and browses or do you have actual forms and such created??

If you are using the menu to sort then that is just what it is...a manual way to do so. You need to use an event somewhere. It may even be that you are just looking at the tables directly and want them to open up sorted?? This can be done with xbasic, but not certain is doable with action scripting.

Well, enough guessing for this am!! Maybe, I just cannot see what is wanted or how you are doing things and others can.

Yes, I would like to open the database quick sorted. what I did was use the control panel to open the code editor and from there I was stuck. How do I proceed with what you suggest? I am computer knowledgable but not Alpha able.

            Re: having to resort

            Well,
The only way I know of is to use an autoexec script. All you would do is to go to the code tab of the control panel, right click, choose create new script and save it as "autoexec". In design mode for the autoexec script you would place something like the following--

            Code:
            dim t as p
t=table.open("Put the name of whatever table you want sorted here inside quotes")
t.order("Put whatever field you want your sort order to be on here inside quotes")
            t.close()
You could do this for all your tables if wanted.....am wondering why you are not creating and using forms based on whatever tables/sets you have (rhetorical)?? Guess a matter of preference I guess.

Thank You For The Information. I Originally Made This Database With The Dos Version Of Alpha V7 Ver 4 (i Think That Was The Version) - I Still Prefer It For It's Simplicity But I Had A Problem Printing Mailing Labels And Therefore Switched To This Version

                Re: having to resort

Besides the user manual, there are also tutorials for Alpha that I think you should avail to yourself. Another good way to learn what is possible is just to look at the hundreds of samples that have been attached to the messageboard over the years (this is my Main way of learning BTW). At the point you are at I think that almost any sample would be beneficial just to get ideas. I still download virtually every attached sample just to add to my own "help" file....to learn and then be able to provide them back at times to aid others.

I doubt I have helped much, but maybe at least have given you a few ideas of how to proceed.
