Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Run Vista as server to host a5w web app

Bought A5 v8 for desktop development now doing web apps but the Application Server in the environment does not support hosting to the internet or am I missing something. I know I can install IIS on Win Vista but it will not host the A5 web applications. I noticed on the website that they say it can be done by turning the local machine into a server??? Well if you can afford Win Server (any flavor), but not sure what they mean about "simply turn into a server".

Any help is appreciated, I am just an unemployed programmer so I can't even begin to afford to buy the real A5 Application server - ouch!! Really can't see doing any further development if in A5 if I can't see my own apps from elsewhere on the internet...

    Thanks in advance.

There is an Application Server built in to the Alpha Five development platform, and then there is the standalone Application Server. Unfortunately, the built-in version is only for LOCAL use, suitable for development and testing. If you want to deploy your application on the Internet, you need that standalone product.

Well What A Bloody Waste Of Money Buying This Product!!!! Only To Turn Around And Have To Buy Another To Get It To Work Right!!!

Going Back To Visual Studio, At Least That Has Everything I Need Without Having To Buy Another Product!!!!!!!!

Wish I Have Never Had Bought This!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Visual Studio has a full web server? I don't use VS, so maybe I am wrong, but from reading, your choices are to 'code' a feature-poor web server, use IIS (not sure if Apache works with VB apps), or purchase the .NET web server. Here is a quote that says VS comes with a LOCAL web server, just like Alpha. Can you clarify, does it come with a full web server for FREE?

"NET Development Server for testing and running Web sites. ... NET Development Server, which is included with Visual Web Developer, is a Web server that runs locally on Windows operating systems, .... Visual Studio Visual Web Developer .."

I think also, its like tossing the baby out with the bathwater. You might evaluate total cost based on development time (including Alpha's built in security model, etc.) and other factors. Not saying it will come out in Alpha's favor.

Alpha's server costs ARE more than a pure PHP application, but probably less than if you were to deploy a VStudio app on the web. You pay for the server license, and the hardware requirements are Window, which costs more than an Apache/Linux model. But you, alone, by yourself, can create and deploy a winning web application; not sure if the average person could do that with Visual Studio, PHP, etc..

Re: Run Vista as server to host a5w web app

Here is a quote from Alpha 5 site:

Alpha Five is a powerful platform for building and deploying database application over the Internet or an intranet.

Let's examine this false claim. Yes it is a powerful platform for building, but not deploying over the net. You need to buy another piece of software to do it. This is MISLEADING! I am not a company, I am an unemployed programmer just trying to keep busy, write some software, learn some new skills so I can't afford expensive packages. As for VS, there are express versions that allow you to do just about anything you want. And if you need to put it on the web, well there is IIS which is FREE.

I'm upset with misleading software claims. My fault too, probably should have read it all very closely instead of just jumping at all the claims.

So in short, yes I can build equivalent web apps just as fast as Alpha 5 in VS using either C# or VB.NET! And I don't have to shell out several hundred dollars for something to make them work...

            Let's examine this false claim.
And then a few lines below that one:

The basic building process consists of three steps:
            1. Create web components to enter and display data on your web pages.
            2. Create the web pages. (Use the built-in HTML Editor or a 3rd party editor, like Frontpage.)
            3. Publish your pages to a PC that is running the Alpha Five Application server.
Line 3 is the important one. Now don't get me wrong here, I'm not trying to antagonize you. I know how much of a sick feeling it is to get surprised when you least can afford it. Some of the rest of us are going through the exact same thing as you are too. But I would ask you to sit back and take a breath and when you feel calmer think about what it is you need to accomplish and perhaps there are ways around this until things seem a little more affordable. Don't know how far along you are with learning the web side but there is a learning curve. right now you could use this time for learning and refining your skills with A5. If you need to deploy for potential clients to see, you could look at a hosting company - no up front cost of the WAS and minimal monthly costs.

Paying for the web access is really no different than having to use additional purchased software for the desktop apps that you've created (runtimes).

Anyways, Alpha 5 is a great "platform" made up of many pieces - development package, desktop runtime software and web application software. When compared to many other packages, the cost is not really that much for the rapid development that A5 provides. Recently there was an offer for all of the above for $599 less 20%. Perhaps once you have your web apps perfected, you might have a new job and version 10 might be available by then.

Re: Run Vista as server to host a5w web app

Pleaze, unfair. Microsoft's home page has, among others, two statements about Visual Studio 2008:

              1) Your development happy place.
              2) The Visual Studio development system is a comprehensive suite of tools designed to help software developers create innovative, next-gen applications.

Dig deeper, you can purchase VS alone for $800 or the Development Edition for over $5K; and there are a dozen other combinations at different prices.

I don't know where you purchased Alpha Five, but the same page that you got your quote from also has a link titled "What do I need to buy for a Desktop or Web Application?". I have not read their latest sales pitches, but I am sure they tried to sell you the App Server also, probably as part of a bundle. The prices on their website are a whole lot more than the bundles at sale prices.

I guess the real reason I make these comments is I want you to evaluate the total picture, not hang your decision on something that was quite accidental. If you choose Alpha, all of us here will help you with the learning curve.
