Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    code to populate a dropdown box

    Hi I have a dialog with some dropdown box's

    I would like to populate the drop down box's with data only related to the customer logged in....

    I have put this code in the Activate Event, to create a variable that i can use as the choice for the drop down.

    cu = session.card_No
    dim vFilter as C
    dim client as c
    vFilter = "card_no =\""+cu+"\""
    client = table.external_record_content_get("[pathalias.adb_path]\users.dbf", "client_id","client_id",vfilter)

    dim xfilter as c
    dim cost as c
    cost = table.external_record_content_get("[pathalias.adb_path]\norad.dbf", "fixed_cost_centres","fixed_cost_centres",xfilter)

    When I save the dialog i get the following error :----

    Errors in: event.Activate code:
    Property not found
    session.card_No subelement not found.

    Can any one tell me where i am going wrong?

    Many Thanks in advance

    That error msg is inconsequential (at least in my experience). If it bothers you then use eval_valid, e.g.

    if eval_valid("session.whatever")
    put your code in here
    end if

    But you can also populate the lookups right within the dropdown definition. Take a look at that - base the filter on a table and then use you session variable there.

    If you need more help, say so.

      Hi

      Thanks for your response and advice....

      I have seen the Filter area, when you select you choices for the drop down.....

      I am not sure how to set up the filter in this way, i guess you use the filter builder but am not sure how to go about it...

      Can you give me any advice, guidance of how to get started?

      Many Thanks

        Re: code to populate a dropdown box

        You are on the right track in your first post, just add the eval_valid() part to clear the variable error. Sorry, you cannot add a filter by session variable if you select Table to define your dropdown. You have to select variable, and go about it the way you already are.

          Thanks Steve, So I guess I was close ish lol

          This is the code I have now....in the Activate

          if eval_valid("session.card_no")

          cu = session.card_No
          dim vFilter as C
          dim client as c
          vFilter = "card_no =\""+cu+"\""
          client = table.external_record_content_get("[pathalias.adb_path]\users.dbf", "client_id","client_id",vfilter)

          dim xfilter as c
          dim cost as c
          cost = table.external_record_content_get("[pathalias.adb_path]\norad.dbf", "fixed_cost_centres","fixed_cost_centres",xfilter)

          end if

          Can I ask, My drop down now has a list of cost centres... but I have a lot of blanks and dupes....

          Can you tell me how to alter the code to take out the dupes and Blanks?

          Many Thanks

            Re: code to populate a dropdown box

            Alpha has lots of functions under List Management to solve that. In your case:

            client = REMOVE_BLANK_LINES(client)

                Re: code to populate a dropdown box

                Since nothing is working sounds like the problem might be how you have the dropdown set. It should be Dynamic and set to Variable, not to Table.

                The second thing that I missed, is that your variables have to be session vars. So add one last line to each of your three var such as:

                session.vend=vend

                and then use session.vend as the variable name for the dropdown.

                  Hi Steve

                  Sorry for my delay in replying to your last post....

                  I have been trying everything here to get this working, just noticed that I was using the wrong field name in my filter and hence why it was showing all the data from the table and not the filtered data.... feel like such a numpty!!

                  However I have fixed this now and have the filtered list showing, however it is still showing the blanks and dupes in the list !! arrrggggggggg

                  My code is below, I wonder if you would mind taking another quick look to see if it looks right? any advice would be greatly appreciated...

                  Many Thanks as always, best regards
