Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Field Rules are not forced with web entry of data?

    Hello,

I thought I knew how this worked after testing it some time ago but a user of my Alpha5 web accessable database was able to submit a record with no data entry even though three of the fields have been set to "Always Required" under the Field Rules -" Data Entry tool. I also am able to submit a record containing no data in those fields.

It seems to me that when I tested this some time ago the WAS sent back an error message stating that the fields left blank were required and cancled the submition enabling the user to correct the blank fields and submit again.

Am I missing something here? I have double checked the Field rules and the fields in question are set as required.

I am using Version 1600_2057 of Alpha Five V6

    Thanks for any help.

    Chuck

Steve. Sorry I did do the search. The only applicable post was the following:

      ...............cut
      Msg ID: 1878
Subject: RE: Where are these Validation Rules?
      Author: Steve Wood
      Date: 03-08-2005 11:49 AM
      File:

Currently, if you make a field required (in the table field rules) and try to add a record in the grid that is missing this value, the grid just comes back as if something happened, but in fact no record is created.

Alpha - any update you can provide? Currently we have to rely on the user to read warnings or beg them to include required fields, properly format values, etc.

      ......... cut

Which is what it used to do when I tested the Web emplementation of my database before launching? The database field rules did force an error which the WAS bounced back to the user. This error would prevent a record Add or Update. However that is not happening now despite the database filed rules being set to cause this error if no entry is sent.

I understand that there is no built-in support for client side field rules in the grid prior to sending the data but that it can be added with javaS if one really wanted it. All I want is the backend support that bounces the error back when a field submitted is not supported by the database field rules. It did use to be there as indicated by the post from Steve Woods and my own experience. I have either messed something up while updating the web interface or something changed in the way the WAS works with the database since I designed it.

You'll find other threads about grids and empty rows, including one from me that, no matter what I did, saved empty records.

There's also one from Jerry Brightbill that says he hasn't categorized the list of rules that work and those that don't. I don't know of such a list, but follow his advice: I don't count on A5 field rules to do the job. The best reliability comes from using a Dialog's events, and "roll your own."

          Chuck:

My understanding is that the field rules generally do not work when data is submitted through he web. I have been experimenting with V7 and this version has all you need to set up just about any rule. V7 makes it very easy to set up a required field for example. Grid events make it very easy to do just about anything you may require. You can also set up the same with V6. CHeck the message board on how to access the beta grid features of V6.
