Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Nested if statements.

    I'm trying to write a complex function which uses nested if statements like the clip below
    Code:
    elseif substr(lang,0,2) = "da" then
      session.countrycode="Danish"
    elseif substr(lang,0,2) = "de" then
    {
     if substr(lang,3,2) = "at"   then
      session.countrycode="German / Austria"
     elseif substr(lang,3,2) = "ch" then
      session.countrycode="German / Switzerland"
     elseif substr(lang,3,2) = "li" then
      session.countrycode="German / Liechtenstein"
     elseif substr(lang,3,2) = "lu" then
      session.countrycode="German / Luxembourg"
    else
         session.countrycode="German / Germany"
    end if
    }
    elseif substr(lang,0,2) = "el" then
      session.countrycode="Greek / Greece"
    elseif substr(lang,0,2) = "en" then
    I get the following error
    ERROR: Mismatched end of loop or if-block
    I can't find anything wrong and the help for IF THEN ELSE doesn't mention whether nesting is allowed.

    You don't need the curly brackets in Alpha xbasic

    Code:
    elseif substr(lang,0,2) = "da" then
    	session.countrycode="Danish"
    elseif substr(lang,0,2) = "de" then
    	if substr(lang,3,2) = "at" then
    		session.countrycode="German / Austria"
    	elseif substr(lang,3,2) = "ch" then
    		session.countrycode="German / Switzerland"
    	elseif substr(lang,3,2) = "li" then
    		session.countrycode="German / Liechtenstein"
    	elseif substr(lang,3,2) = "lu" then
    		session.countrycode="German / Luxembourg"
    	else
    		session.countrycode="German / Germany"
    	end if
    elseif substr(lang,0,2) = "el" then
    	session.countrycode="Greek / Greece"
    elseif substr(lang,0,2) = "en" then

      Robert,

      You also need to use "ELSE IF", not "ELSEIF".

        Ira, both ELSEIF and ELSE IF are valid.

          Not only do you not need them, you cannot use them. They are not valid Xbasic syntax and you must remove them.

            I haven't checked recently (and can't check as I am on the road), but I believe some earlier versions returned syntax errors with ELSEIF (and for me, I always choose more version-independent syntaxes unless there is another benefit)

            Is this a recent change?

              I've been using it since version 1. (I usually prefer the CASE structure for multiple choices but sometimes this gets used - especially when adding to an existing IF.) From the A5 version 1 Help files:
              IF Logical Expression1 [THEN]
              [Statements1]
              [ELSEIF Logical Expression2 [THEN]
              [Statements2] ]
              ...
              [ELSEIF Logical ExpressionN [THEN]
              [StatementsN] ]
              [ELSE
              [Statements] ]
              END IF
              The help section titled 'IF ... THEN ... ELSE' still shows this construction although some of the newer examples use 'else if'. (All lower case now - I think that makes things very difficult to read. As far as I'm concerned, it's like saying, "It saves me time when typing because I don't have to waste a couple milliseconds pressing the 'shift' key and I don't mind wasting even more time later due to the fact that it's harder to read. Of course, that's a personal opinion and I'm sure many disagree.)

                Function not valid

                Thanks everyone. I got it working in the interactive window and defined it as a function. It returns two strings giving the language and country in words from the Request.AcceptLanguage from the browser.

                However when I use it on a A5w page i get the following error. It should return English and Canada.

                500 Internal Server Error
                Script Error
                Error:Script: /ispinfo.a5w line:39
                lcc = lang_country("en-ca")
                Function is not recognized

                BTW the function shows up in the code section for the DB

                  The WAS can not see a function defined in a database, since the web server can be running with no database. The alternatives are to put the function on the page in xbasic code or create an aex file. The aex file can be in the addins_installed folder, which will make it available to the web server and any database, or the aex can be loaded by the page code. The help file covers creating and using an aex.

                    I addiiton to the 2 methods suggested by Jerry, you can also place your function in its own A5W page and use the a5w_include() function to include it on any pages that need it. I typically create a functions.a5w that defines all of the functions for my app and then include it in the A5W pages that need it.

                      Thankyou gentlemen

                      I've put it on the one page that uses it.
