Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Painfully slow local host test

Please can someone point me in the direction of where to find a document that explains in laymans terms how to configure and test web components on local host without having to wait minutes for browser response.
Windows XP SP2, 256mb RAM, ODBC database, columnar grid form with 15 fields selected. In particular using the date picker is particularly slow.

    Thanks

RE: Painfully slow local host test

Check the actual source code on your A5w web pages. I noticed a huge delay if I had included a component in an a5w page, deleted the component in the visual layout but did not delete the code from the HTML page.

Once I cleaned up the HTML code, everything ripped.

    Hope that helps,

    Bob

      Hi Bob,

      Thanks for your reply.

I am pleased that for you, your Alpha for the web exploits have provided more than acceptable performance (having addressed the type of issue you outlined in your response), but I do not have the same scenario as you, I have an exceptionally specified PC enabled for IIS, yet I cannot seem to process data through an Alpha component using ODBC on a localhost without worrying performance bottlenecks. I am trying to determine if this is the development tool I would like to use for some serious applications, however, ease of use in development is no good if the end-user finds time to yawn repeatedly between field entries and clicking the submit button.

Essentialy, I would have liked a definitive answer or even a unanimous vouschafe for the product from the forum, but in reality, I was really expecting, a confident response from Alpha support, that in laymans terms outlined best practices for both localhost set-up and ODBC access (with regard to Alpha web development).

In light of my experience I suspect that I will eventually opt for an alterative solution for ODBC database related web development, even though the Alpha product seems easy to use.

      Many thanks,

      Paul Doherty

RE: Painfully slow local host test

        Paul,

What type of CPU and clock speed are you running the A5 app on?

Your RAM (256MB) is also minimal, even for an OS like XP Pro. I tried running my app on an old 450mhz P3 with 512MB RAM running Win2K3 Server and it was DREADFUL .... basically unusable. The same box runs Linux with Apache quite well.

So I threw some hardware at it. Now it runs on a 3Ghz P4 with a fast 200GB SATA drive and 512MB of RAM and it's pretty damn fast. The OS is Win2k3 Server. After analysis of the performance under load I'm going to increase the RAM to 1GB to decrease page file use. WAS seems to love memory !

Before you throw in the towel on A5, give it a chance on some decent hardware.

        Good luck,

        Bob

          Thanks Bob,

You've told me what I want to know.

Essentially, what I consider to be a good spec PC is in fact in this day and age unsuitable for browser based data applications. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure that your ISP\host system is suitably powerful in respect of processing batch data updates and requests.
