Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How to send them back

    I am adding restriction to various web pages in my WAS application. Already, if they are not logged in, they cannot gain access to any page beyone LOGIN.A5W. However, if a user were to "guess" a page that was, based on their user level, restricted to them, I don't know how to "send them back to the calling page".

    My process would be similar to logintest.a5w that controls access if you are not logged in. I would send them to a "Hey, you can't go here" page, then request they "Click here to go back". Its the "Go back" I don't know how to do.

    Don't see one - is there a session variable that contains the calling page?

    p.s. I know Alpha is working on enhanced methods for page security -- looking forward to it.

    RE: How to send them back

    If the user has clicked a link and is not using personal firewall software, their browser will probably include a referer line, which you can access as request.headers.referer. The referer is not available however when the user got to your page by using a bookmark or typing the URL directly into their browser.

    Because referer is not always available, "go back" is usually implemented with Javascript, using a link like:

    "a href="javascript:history.go(-1)""Back"/a"

    You could alternatively use a session variable as you suggest, but one does not already exist for this purpose. Since you are including a login test on each page, that same login test could also update something like session.last_page if the user was logged in.

      In the webserver help pages look up request variable. You will find your answer there. Good question

        Steve

        What I do if the user manually enters the address for a non-allowed page is to send them back to the logon page, which also logs them out. If they do that a few times, they will quickly become conditioned to following the existing navigation.

          Jerry;

          I like that. Maybe I will send them to my storefront, or for repeat offenders, to the Microsoft Knowledgebase search page!!

            FWIW: Another way to create a Back button doesn't require JavaScript ....

            "FORM>"INPUT TYPE="button" VALUE="Back" onClick="history.go(-1);return true;"> "/FORM>

              Actually Cal

              onClick="history.go(-1);return true;"

              is Javascript. Turn off Javascript in your browser and this won't work.

              If you want to use this approach, you can also set the onClick property of a "a" tag if you'd rather have a "back" link instead of a button.

                Thanks Lenny. I wasn't aware of that but, in retrospect, it should have been obvious due to the similarity of the commands - I just hadn't bothered to make the comparison before posting it.

                Oh well, maybe somebody else can also gain from my ignorance. Now people can see how to do it with either a button or a link.
