Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Dates 30/11/2005 Vs 11/30/2005 AlphaFiveOnline

In Australia we use /2 (dd/mm/yyyy) but A5Online converts to US Format: /1 eg. (mm/dd/yyyy) on my pages. Anyone know how to resolve this within the Web Projects Control Panel.

Take a look at this page and see if it helps.

Nice, but not handy and very unfriendly to use.

      Edward,

at first glance I thought I finally had a solution to my problem (the dutch are in a similar situation). But at second thought this solution "takes you from the rain into the drip" (dutch saying) ;)
      • It has to be done for every date field in a Search (and what about a quick search field that includes multiple fields, including one or more date fields?)
      • You must know the date settings of the WAS server, so you cannot provide a universal solution.
      • You must put code in a page, what I avoid as much as possible.

I really would appreciate something that neutralizes the date formats in the grid AND in the WAS, which would make it possible to work with a "universal date format". The better thing would be if this was accomplished inside the WAS logic, so that the developer would not have to worry about conversions in grids or in a5w pages.

I say it again *sigh* : this would make A5 a lot more attractive for non-american users.

        Dates unacceptable

I asked for a solution form A5-Online and didn't get a reply. This condition is unacceptable full stop. The Grid builder needs a date format function and the server needs to look at that setting and display and save it in the correct format. I'll report it as a bug to Selwyn.

Peter, where and when did you send this inquiry?

In any case, the Web Application Server does not have the ability to have date formats vary from application to aplpication. As the AlphaFiveOnline Server and the vast majority of the customers are in the U.S., it uses U.S. date formats.

            Sent to:

Aditya Prasetyo this is the person that established my account and answered my initial queries - Also Lenny many thanks for you good work on getting me going last week. I have noticed the A5-Online works with some saves and not others - or just hangs error 500 (same app, same data), is there a problem again I'm not using anything other than grid Web Components.

AlphaFiveOnline issues should not be sent directly to Adi, he does not work in the support department and he will be unable to help you (though he should have forwarded your inquiry to someone that could).

If you post the complete text of the 500 error message, I can help you determine the cause.

                Lenny,
I understand this. What I do not understand is that the developer of a web app must build translations for date formats that are locally used on the WAS server. If I want to sell my application world wide I don't want to care about the locally used date (and decimal and thousands and character) format, since I do not know where the WAS will run.

There really should be a way to take care of this 'globality' issue.

Agreed. And this is something that we are working on. But it is a complex problem because of the way our code base deals with dates internally. We unfortunately will not have a complete solution for quite some time. We are looking at partial solutions that we can make available sooner.

                    Thanks Lenny,

I am confident that you guys find a solution. Untill then I'll have to host my databases on a dutch server, which fortunately is possible.
