Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Web Server V7 used with V5

I have been using the Version 6 Web Server with our Version 5 Database. Can the V7 Web Server be used with Version 5 without any problems?

We have been using a v7 WAS application with an Alpha v4.5 database and it works just fine, so I assume you would have no problems with version 5.

        This is interesting !
How would you use a V5 database to build a V6 or V7 webapplication without converting the actual database to V6 or V7 version ?

I was always under the impression you HAD to update from V5 to V6 or V7 in order to be able to use the features like the Web Component Builder, WAS, etc. etc. Was I wrong all along?

Can I just start Alpha Five V7, load a V5 database and just start producing components WITHOUT thereby upgrading the underlaying database to V7 ?

        Kind regards,

Our networked in-house database is currently running Alpha5V5 applications with forms, reports etc. Alpha5V6 is used only as a Webserver in accessing the tables only. We do not use V6 for the desktop apps. The precaution is that you cannot open forms or reports made from V5 with V6. If you do, it will convert them and then not accessable by V5 any more.

That's correct Marcel. The web application server is only "looking" at the raw data in the A5, v5 tables. In that respect there is no reason to upgrade to v6 or v7 other than to get the WAS, which is now sold separately. In fact, the WAS can put data on the web from totally separate applications, such as Excel or other ODBC compliant data sources.

However, as stated above, forms and reports created in v5 may not open in v6 or 7, and if you convert them to v6 or 7, you will no longer be able to open them in v5. Likewise, if you use v5 on one computer, and v6 or 7 on another computer, you can still access the original database created in v5 on both computers, but if you created any forms or reports in v6 or 7, the folks using v5 will get an error message when they try to open them.

At my department, we still use v4.5 on all of our desktops, except for the server, and the desktop that is used to create the WAS pages. That one has both v4.5 and v7 on it. Meanwhile, all of our forms were created in version 4.5, so everybody can open them and print out reports. We'll probably upgrade all of them to version 7 in the future, but for now it seems to work just fine.

              Hi Rich,

It is indeed the case that the complete websection of A5 is separate from the desktop application, which has its effect on upgrading issues.

There have been some questions on my side regarding upgrading issues for instance from V5 to V6 or V7. There is hardly any documentation to be found on that except that I saw that in the helpsection there has been an addition to this subject "Upgrading from version 6 to version 7" most recently.

When you look at "upgrading", the current situation is, that simply opening a database will not upgrade it. Going to the web control panel and editing components will not touch your forms, scripts, tables etc. It will only pick up any V7 changes if you save something and what you are saving takes advantage of new V7 functionality.

And even then, only what you are saving will be upgraded, so changing a single form, for example, will leave the others untouched.
              (Source: Alpha Five, Lenny Forziati)

This is of importance to be aware of. It is possible to open forms created under V5 with the V7 application and save them -no changes-. Users will still be able to open that form with V5.
It is possible to open forms created under V5 with the V7 application and change them, using functionality that also existed in V5, and then save it. Users will still be able to open that form with V5.
When you open forms created under V5 with the V7 application and change them using new functionality from V7 which did not excist under V5 users will (understandably) run into problems.

Furthermore, to make this thread complete, it is possible to create V6 components based on V5 tables, and then upgrade from V6 to V7 with regards to the components only and still be able to run V5 forms etc. from the desktop side.

For me, this was valuable information from Lenny, and my advise would be to create another section in the helpsection stating this kind of information to keep it central.

              Kind regards,

              Marcel
