Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Duplicating Data in 2 Fields in a Record

    I have a table that has two fields (among many others). "Code" and "VCode." On one particular grid, I would like the "Vcode" field automatically filled with the data entered in the "Code" field.

    I didn't want to do this as a Field Rule in the table, because there will be times in other grids where I don't want the "Vcode" field filled by the "Code" field automatically, so I created a calculation in the Query (dbf) that goes like this:

    code = (persons_bhpd->Vcode) (* persons_bhpd is the table name.)

    But nothing happens when the user submits his data in the "Vcode" field.

    Is this the right way to accomplish this, or is there a better way?

    Not to confuse everybody, I said this wrong. I want the "Code" field filled with data from the "Vcode" field, not the other way around. But either way, it's not working.

      Although I haven't tried this, the syntax would be:
      Code:
      code = vcode
      .

          Rich,

          I guess you want the field being filled after the user changed the record?
          In that case you might try the CanUpdate Event (sie attachment).
          Now the field is filled after the user presses Submit.
          Might this help you?

            Yes this happens after the user changes the record.

            Rene I'm not much on code, but I tried using your example to make this work in the CanUpdateRecord section, but it still does nothing.

            Please take a look at my screenshot and tell me if I have it set up correctly.

              The reference to vcode should be
              Code:
              DataSubmitted.vcode
              .

                Just vcode? How does it know which field to fill?

                  Datasubmitted.vcode is how you reference the calculated vcode field. Or are you asking a different question?

                    Rich,

                    I think that this line should read:
                    Code:
                    DataSubmitted.vcode=DataSubmitted.code
                    This will fill the field vcode with the value of the field code.

                      Well actually I'm trying to do it the other way around, fill the "code" field with the "vcode" data, but nevertheless, I've tried it both ways, vcode=code, and code=vcode and still nothing happens when the submit button is pushed.

                      The target (empty) field still stays blank. :(

                        Rich, reload the forum page, I had an error and I corrected it a minute later.

                            This is one of many threads that demonstrate that A5 WAS need better debug features. This would be so simple to fix with better debug abilities. Developers spend days solving a simple problem.

                            Following is a wishlist thread I started months ago.

                              Rich,

                              the update only works (as far as I have experienced) if the field that you change is updatable (not a label). It may be hidden (hide row).
