Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Problems with email_smtp_send(ps, pm)

    I have been using email_send() successfully for some time. However I have found a need to change the "from_alias" field. Sending with email_send2() works, but the received email contains the alias from the Alpha 5 server settings and not the ".from_alias" variable setting. I have tried it on my own computer as well as on Alpha 5 Online. The same results. In desperation I have attempted to use "email_smtp_send(ps, pm)" and cannot get it to work at all. Here is a sample of the script I am trying to test which is right out of the help examples (my local server does not require SMTP authentication. I added the correct ID and password fields when using my primary email server when running on Alpha Online):

    Code:
    dim pm as P
    dim ps as P
    dim ok as L
    dim opensm as L
    opensm = email_smtp_open(ps, "smtp.west.cox.net", 25, "", "")
    if opensm then
        pm.from = "[email protected]"
        pm.from_alias = "test"
        pm.to = "[email protected]"
        pm.CC = ""
        pm.BCC = ""
        pm.subject = "Hi"
        pm.message = "were you available for meeting?"
        pm.html_message = "<HTML><B>This is the message in HTML</B></HTML>"
        pm.attachments =""
        ok = email_smtp_send(ps, pm)
    end if
    email_smtp_close(ps)
    delete ps
    delete pm
    end
    The open appears to work (returns true) but the send doesn't (ok=false, email does not go through). I really don't need all of the features of the SMTP approach and would prefer using send2. All I really need is an alternate "from_alias" that works. Can anyone help? Thanks,
    Ken

    Re: Problems with email_smtp_send(ps, pm)

    Email_Send() calls email_send2() internally and email_send2() calls email_smtp_open() & email_smtp_send(), so if email_send() works, so does email_smtp_open(). The From_alias is assigned automatically by the profile, so if you want to change the from alias, just change the "Your Name" field in the email profile.

    If you want to know why the low level functions aren't working, you can check ps.buffer after the send call. It may contain information about what is happening on the server end.

    Ultimately, you have the ps and pm parameters backwards on the email_smtp_send() call. It should be email_smtp_send(pm, ps).

      Re: Problems with email_smtp_send(ps, pm)

      The reversal of PM and PS is a common mistake. Some of the older documentation had it wrong. I see that my (old, Dated Dec. 2005) documentation for email_smtp_open() still has it backwards. I pointed out an error to Ed on one of these help topics a while ago and trust he fixed it.

      Let me suggest to everyone reading this:

      Ed/Aaron: Plz check the help docs

      Everyone else (including me -- I had no idea my docs were that old): Update your help file with a download from Alphasoftware.

        Thanks! That was it - PS and Pm swapped and everythings works great. Thanks so much for the quick reply.

          Steve and Aaron,

          My version of the CHM help file is dated September 19, 2006 and it still has the "pm" and "ps" in the wrong order. Just thought you should know.

          I am very grateful that the message board is here to help me correct this very understandable mistake in the documentation. Go Alpha!

            Aaron. My send is suddendly not working. (pm & ps in correct order) How do I see what is in the pm.buffer? I tried ui_msg... and Debug with no results. Guess it should provide the answer from what you say, but how do I view it?
            Talked to provider three times, all seems well, including the smtp and pop ports. Oh, this is with the A5 email client. Thanks.
