Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Filemaker ODBC error

I'm trying to convert all my apps from Filemaker, but first I need to extract Filemaker data to be hosted on the web. I have created my first WAS app using ADO/ODBC connection to the FM database. This seems to work okay to a point. The default selection of records will display but when I try to vary the search I get the following error excerpt:-
    Code:
    WHERE (Ener.Origin = 'EU') AND (( {fn LOCATE(upper(?), CONCAT('xx',upper(Vessel)),2)} - 2 > 0 ))
    ORDER BY Ener.ArrivalDate[DataDirect][ODBC SequeLink driver][ODBC Socket][DataDirect]
[ODBC FileMaker driver][FileMaker]Parse Error in SQL
I have seen a couple of postings from earlier this year on this subject but with no apparent definative resolve. Can anyone help (You don't want me to go back to Filemaker!)

    Thanks & Regards

If you are converting from Filemaker, why do you want to stay with the Filemaker tables?

Use the ADO Import and import the tables into Alpha 5 and then work with those tables instead of using ODBC to another flavour of dbfs.

All I see is another layer of complexity that doesn't have a gain for you. Now if you had the data in MySQL, MSSQL, or Oracle, then I would understand the need to connect via ODBC......

Al is right, you're doing it the hard way. I just created an entire records management system in A5/WAS that an agency had used for years in Filemaker Pro. (They wanted more features and web access.)

Fortunately for me, all of Filemaker's data was stored in standard .dbf format, so it was simple to import it into Alpha 5. I just copied the filemaker tables into my A5 application, then appended the data from the Filemaker tables to my new tables. It worked like a champ, and I still have the original filemaker tables nearby in case I need to refer back to their original data and layout for some reason.

        Re: Filemaker ODBC error

Thanks for the replies Rich & Al

The reason I'm trying to do it this way is I have a fairly large application in Filemaker which will take some time to convert, and that's after I've learned Alpha. Plus if I converted this part it would mean my users would be having to use Filemaker and Alpha simultaniously which I'm not sure I really want to do at this point in time.

Having said that the ODBC seems to work fine apart from this search error. After having seen postings from earlier in the year on the same error I thought it may be something others have investigated since.
