Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Cannot Find Server - 'The page cannot be displayed'

Trying to host a web site on my home computer running XP, but I cannot get the home page to run. I have followed the directions from the article 'How to run the Alpha Five V7 WAS from your Home or Office Computer'.

    I have done the following:

    1. Purchased and installed WAS license, server running fine for testing.
    2. Assigned Server Port 8080
    3. Web Page titled 'index.a5w' published to C:\A5Webroot
    4. Configured McAfee Firewall to allow A5V7 and added port 8080

I tested it by typing in the URL http://localhost:8080 and it works perfectly everytime, but when I try to type in 'http://my.IP.address:8080' I get 'The page cannot be displayed' error.

I disabled my Firewall and made sure no other firewalls were running, but it still doesn't work.
I do not have a router, my computer is connected directly to my DSL modem and I'm not sure where to go from here.

I have checked my IP address several times to make sure it is correct, both from www.whatsmyip.org and from two other sources.

I have searched the posts but haven't found much on the subject. If anyone of you internet gurus out there could give me some insight, I'd appreciate it.

Hhhmmm... I got it to work on my machine at home - with a static index.a5w page, anyway. But when I try to get my app to work, it works within the confines of my home network just fine, but not from outside. In my case, I get a timeout error?

Re: Cannot Find Server - 'The page cannot be displayed'

Hmm - just was dealing with this last night. In my case I do have a router, and had previously (and successfully) set this up so my site was displaying correctly. Last night I noticed that it was not working anymore, and found that my internal ip address had changed. As far as I know, no-ip's service takes care of the external ip, but if my router is pointing to a now-incorrect internal ip, how do I deal with that?

Re: Cannot Find Server - 'The page cannot be displayed'

Are you testing from an external network, or from your home machine but just using the external address? Most routers do not support "hairpinning", and even though you don't have a stand-alone router, your DSL modem is actually a router of sorts.

If you are testing from an external network, make sure that your ISP is not blocking the port you are using. Verizon for example tends to block ports that are likely to be used for servers because it is against their terms to run a server (check your terms, they may vary). Other ISPs may do so as well.

If you are testing from an external network and you have confirmed the port is not blocked, see the documentation regarding turning of "friendly errors" so we can see what the real error message is.

Re: Cannot Find Server - 'The page cannot be displayed'

So I am trying to figure out how to keep my internal ip address constant,so that my router will be pointing to the correct address. Is it true that I should change my internet settings from "obtain internet address automatically" to setting a static ip address? Is this the way to go? Or, should I change the router settings? Right now they are as directed by alpha's instructions. I don't know much about this kind of thing, so thanks for your help!

Re: Cannot Find Server - 'The page cannot be displayed'

Your IP is provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). You either purchase a static or a dynamic IP from them. Unless you specifically asked for it, you most likely ordered a dynamic IP. Static IP's are more commonplace for business accounts.

The instructions on Alpha's website for setting up a web server include a section referencing a product called NO-IP (http://www.no-ip.com/). This product, and similar products, provide you with a method to have a static name that points to your router, even when your IP changes. You can't stop your IP from changing unless you order a static IP from your ISP.

So, if you have a dymamic IP, either call your ISP and order a static IP, or go to the NO-IP address above and order their services (cheaper).

Re: Cannot Find Server - 'The page cannot be displayed'

Yes, I have a dynamic ip. I use no-ip.com's services to point to my router, to deal with when my external ip address changes. This is working fine. However, I noticed that my internal ip address changed, which no-ip doesn't, as far as I know, address. Last night, when I updated my router's settings to reflect what my INTERNAL ip address was now showing, my site was suddenly live again.I am not so savvy to stuff like this, so I am wondering, must I keep up with the internal ip changes somehow, or switch my settings to show a static address, or what? Thanks
PS - ok, just for chuckles, here is my practice site, which is up at the moment - (but not for long, due to its stage of construction :) )

Notice the very original layout/style, and for some reason I am still selling sports equipment :).
we'll see how far I get trying to adjust the alphasports web app - its a good learning tool anyway.

Re: Cannot Find Server - 'The page cannot be displayed'

Oops, sorry wasn't paying attention; internal/external. On many of my workstations I have the connection set to "Use the following IP address" and have one typed in explicitly. I needed that for reasons similar to your issue so the router could passthrough services to a particular workstation.

Re: Cannot Find Server - 'The page cannot be displayed'

Thanks All - For Your Help!

Lenny was correct in that my modem does act like a router. I found a manual on-line for my modem and read the article: 'How to configure Port Forwarding - Port 80 for Web Hosting'. The manual was provided by my ISP, so I figured it was safe to say that they weren't blocking any ports.

After correctly configuring my modem and typing in http://My_Internal_IP Address:8080' it is working beautifully.

Thanks again Lenny for explaining what hairpinning is by providing this link.

All I need to do now is test it from another internet connection using my External IP Address which I believe is static, since I have not seen it change in several days. Hopefully all will go well.
