Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Deep Tracking - Alpha Web Applications

I have always included some level of tracking (auditing) in my web applications. This lets the customer (and me) see how the WAS is being used. I can record Logins and keep a record of every time someone adds/deletes/updates a record.

I am curious if other WAS users would be interested in a "Deep Tracking" system that went all out. This system tracks total web activity, not just WAS activity. Its real-time, meaning you can witness user activity as it happens. I have a PDF here with complete description and some screen shots, and listed just the features below.

I am also interested in what you think I could charge for this. Its server based, so would have to be a minimum of $40 per month on subscription with a discount for per-paid annual subscription. If just the "Alpha WAS Specific items were purchased, that portion could be a one-time purchase around $50.00.

This program is ready to ship now, so if you are interested, let me know.

    General Features
     Web-based program, available 24/7.
May be used on Alpha Web Application server or any web site

That looks pretty good Steve. I've been thinking about establishing more tracking myself, and you're really done a great job.

I dunno on a price, though it would certainly save me a bunch of time to buy yours rather than build my own.

Steve, are you referring to the 'whole thing', or just the Alpha WAS specific tracking items? In a way, its really split in to two items, each with a different purpose. One tracks the Alpha WAS as an 'application' so you can monitor performance and user patterns, the other tracks general website as a whole for use in marketing, improving website design, etc.

In addition to lots of stats, it provides little "stories" like this true one from today.
      • A visitor from Holland came to my home page from a link on Dr Wayne's site and read my home page for 18 seconds.
      • They clicked on the Examples page and kept that page static more than 3 minutes.
      • They clicked on the For Developers page and stayed there for only 13 seconds.
      • They clicked on a link advertising A5Doc and went off to Bill Parker's site

And just after that, someone from W. Virginia (by God) clicked on my web address in a forum post, details are in the attached graphic. In my tracking I can click on the referring forum post and go right back to the very post the visitor came from.

It also opens up your eyes to who is visiting your site/application. I get regular visits form China, Egypt, etc. I always thought those were bogus hits, but I can now see that they actively browse the site and in some cases can see the actual search term they typed in to Google/Yahoo/MSN to find me. Its quite fascinating to watch.

Rich, I think the GOP beat me to the whole big bro thing. Actually, if you read my blog entry on Mass Mailing Software, you will see big brother thing is in full swing - by the people that sell you services on the net.

In my next newsletter I have an amazing story about click-fraud where an 'legitimate' emarketing company completely faked all of our traffic and tried to pretend they actually sent the email, which they did not. Actually, they did send the emails, but not to our intended target. Rather they went to the seedy side of the net to stay-at-home Mom's and the unemployed who, without interest, happily "clicked" on our ad in order to earn a nickle.

I used the tools mentioned in this thread to detect and gather evidence, and yes it is going to the FBI for investigation. So you see, what you don't know can hurt you. This tracking is very useful for understanding how your WAS system works; but also for analyzing marketing efforts. The great advantage for me is that I come to understand how people find my website and what they are looking for. To the extent that I can provide that service, and properly advertise it, the tracking is well worth it.
