Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Browser problems

I use my own server to host pages created in Alpha5. A few days ago I discovered that I could not view any .a5w pages. I checked that all files were published and that server was running. When I view the files in the localhost everything seems fine, but when I try to view them via the web I have no luck.

Could anybody maybe give me any ideas how to solve this problem?

Need more info, like error message or just blank screen? If error, what does it say? Screenshot helps, etc.

      Re: Browser problems

      Hi Steve.
It just says that the page could not be opened. It is the typical page not found error. The only difference that I do see is that normally it says : "Opening http://...." on opening. Now what I see is : "Waiting for http://...." and then after a while the time out error of page not found.

      Hope this could help.

        Re: Browser problems

If the Alpha server is running and there was an error, it would reference the error along with the current version of Alpha Five. Since you aren't getting that error information, either the Alpha WAS is really not running, or the problem is something other than Alpha.

Perhaps your firewall is restricting access to the port Alpha is using. Normally this is port 80, but you could have changed it in the configuration screen. Can you get to OTHER pages besides .A5W pages? If you are behind a firewall, a good test is to ping the server both from inside the firewall and from outside. If it works fine from inside, then your firewall is restricting access.

It also could be a resource issue. Just reboot the server for the easy way out. Or, run task manager on the server and see if Alpha (or something else) is running at high memory or CPU.

Is your "server" the same machine where you have the full version of Alpha for development? If so, you could have accidently made some setting for the web server in that copy of Alpha that affected the server configuration.

          Re: Browser problems

Along with what Steve just said...it does sound like a firewall issue---especially if you use the Windows firewall. A recurring problem I have had with Windows firewall is that XP will revert back to setting the firewall to "On" even after setting it to "Off" so even if you had set it to Off I would still check it. Windows does as Windows wants sometimes.

            Re: Browser problems

I have checked all the different options that you mention. I am currently using IE7 and it does not display the error codes anymore, just informing you.

Thanks anyway - if you have another suggestion please let met know. Maybe I should format my PC (as it is due but I don't have the guts to go through all that...hell.)

              Re: Browser problems

If you have a public IP address, and you don't mind, let us know what that is (here or in a private email) so someone else can try to access the site.

IE7 and other recent web developments make is more frustrating to determine cause. Google will automatically search for phrases you use in the URL if the URL is bad. Earthlink automatically gives suggestions on the right URL if the url is not found. Frustrating when you try to enter //localhost/index.a5w and all of your web services compete to NOT give you a proper error code.

Anyway, don't format your PC (drive), that's useless. Check the following:

              - Compact your database (File/Compact Database) which will rebuild all of the indexes.
              - If you didn't, do ping your server from both inside and outside the firewall. Tell us what you find out (response or failure).
              - do try to access a file on your WAS. Such as //localhost/mytextfile.txt
              - try that same test from outside the firewall, such as http://mydomain/mytextfile.txt.

Also, try renaming your Document Root (e.g.: C:\A5Webroot on your server, if that's what you have as your Alpha WAS Document Root).

Continuing - rename it to A5Webroot_Old. Then go back and republish all files. Try to access again. Also look to see that it DID in fact publish what you expected to, where you expected it to.
