Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Beginners Help Needed

Wow - sure could use a beginners forum!

I just downloaded and I am trying to evaluate the Alpha 5 V7 software for our company - however, I am having problems just getting the "Web Application" database to start up that ships with Alpha 5 V7?

I keep getting "error" messages of "timing out". I did finally get the "Alpha Five Version 7 - Web Application Server Demo Pages" page to display, and oit reads at the top that I am currently not logged in. However, when I click on any of links - I get a "Connection was Reset" error.

Any ideas on what I need to do?

    Thank you!

    Don

    Don:

When you open the main menu of the application you will see a screen that provides steps for you to follow. Publish all the files and then start the web server. Once that is done you go to the last step which is to launch the home page of the web application . Alpha will open the default web browser and you you should see the opening page. If there are problems, be more specific where in this list of steps you are having problems so someone can pinpoint the problem and help you.

Steve - That is where the problem occurs. I published the files, started the web server, and clicked on the step that launches the homepage... and I receive the errors from that point on.

You need the secret password, which can be secured by sending ....

Welcome to Alpha! Sorry you're having trouble. I wonder if your PC is underpowered, or maybe an antivirus program is interfering?

Stick with this -- Alpha Five is going to change your life for the better!

Well, I don't know about it changing my life... right now I am pretty frustrated with it. I have turned off all virus protection, turned off the firewall, still nothing... just an error that the connection has been reset?

I have sent message after message to the Alpha rep and I am getting no response whatsoever. I am pretty disappointed at this point.

I was in hopes that this would be a great product.

            Re: Beginners Help Needed

Alpha's tech guys are striving for a final release on version 8, so daily support isn't what it might be in other times.

Have you tried this on a different computer?

            Try downloading and reinstalling again?

Please don't give up, and feel very free to let us know how we might be able to help.

              Don,

What you are experiencing is definitely an anomaly and caused by some issue with your PC or other environmental factors. Can you provide a screenshot of the error (to help determine if it is an Alpha error, or the browser). What browser are you using, IE, Firefox, etc. and is it the latest version. And, as Steve suggested, is your PC out of date - low RAM, running Win98, etc.

Well, those look fine, including that its the Home Edition.

Are you publishing to the Local Webroot? That is, when you click Publish, are you publishing to Local Webroot? And the Web Application Server icon (in your toolbar) is green (not red)?
