Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Does modifying a variable hurt?

I created a whole project and used the short sighted settings for a numeric variable of: 5,2. Now I need to make it bigger (like 8,2 or 10,2). I only have two tables that need an update, but will this cause havoc in my web components (about 40-50 components use these variables). Do I need to change anything?

In my defense, I was thinking 5 digits plus 2 decimal (not 5 spaces, with 3 used by the decimal point and two decimal digits--thus an effective limit of 99.99).

    Any help/advice appreciated.

    Ow Ow Ow It Hurts!!!!

Seriously, it shouldn't be too bad.

Make a backup then restructure the pertinent tables.

Check any components' controls where you may have specified a shorter length.

That's about it though you may have a misc. cleanup here or there -- the devil's always in the details and I don't know yours.

Thanks, Steve. Of course I put that subject line in there on purpose. I'll give it a go on the local system, and see what happens. I'll let you know how much it hurts.

One thing I really like about this board: most of us seem to have a good sense of humor. It really helps, even (or especially) when creating databases!

Re: Does modifying a variable hurt?

Well, I updated the table structure and everything works. I also did a search across all web files (Edit->Search in all Web Project files...) for "Hours,N,5" and found 21 files that referred to the pertinent field.

I went into each file and refreshed the field list (click on Query (DBF) then on the Refresh field list button next to the Table name dropdown list). I also updated any file that included a field for HOURS to Size: 8 and Maximum Length: 8.

All seems to be working well. I just wish I had a simple way to update those fields without going into each file. I can't imagine if I had a hundred or so files to update!

This is why planning is so important. Just ask the Y2K and DST folks. And sometimes planning means imagining just a bit.

You are right. And you can bet I'll never make a numeric field only 5,2 again! Live and learn.
