Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Using WAS7 with A5v8 Desktop

I tried to search for this subject but I honestly do not understand how to use the keyword search on this forum. It never works for me. Anyway...

I currently have the WAS version 7 installed on my server and it is functional. I have A5v7 on one of my desktops that I have been using for developing my applications. Now I have purchased a new laptop computer and it uses Vista. So, I purchased a new copy of A5v8 Enterprise to use on this new laptop. I plan on installing it on my server as well, which currently does not have a desktop version installed (it has the WASv7 only). I can then remote desktop into the server while in the office (it is headless - I use a another terminal in the office to access when needed) and use the A5v8 desktop to make changes to the database applications.

    I have two questions:

One: will I be able to use A5v8 Enterprise to develop web applications and then publish them to the webroot folder, just like I do now with A5v7? Will WAS7 then serve these apps with no problem?

Two: if I use A5v8 to develop a desktop application can I then use that application from my A5v7 and A5v6 terminals (PC's with A5 v7 and v6 installed) the same as I am doing now when developing in A5v7? How can I avoid using v8 features that may not work in the earlier versions?

I apologize if this has been thoroughly discussed before. I've been reading the forum for two days and can't seem to get this kind of clarification. I'm hoping that all I needed was the A5v8 Enterprise desktop version. I did not buy the Application Server.

    Thanks for your help.

Definite No on the first question. You cannot run a V8 web app on a V7 Application server. The format of the V8 files are different and V7 would not know how to process. Others have tried and get errors.

If no one answers, ask the desktop question over on the V8 Desktop forum where more of the desktop experts hang out.

Ok, can I assume that the reverse, running WAS7 apps on the v8 AS will work?

So, it seems, if I want to use Vista at all I must upgrade not only my local desktop copy but also the web Application Server. Shame, I never really got started with WAS7. Turns out it will be a waste of money.

      Thank you,
      Sean

Many people are running v7 applications on a v8 server. You do need to open the v7 app in v8, and re-publish to the server. Makes me think the reverse of that might work too, that is take your v8 app in to v7 an republish IF obviously you did not use any features not available in v7.

But you can also keep v7 and continue to use it, Desktop and Web, as is on Vista. Check this forum for how to re-install v7 on Vista. The solution, as I understand it, is to not install to the Program Files folder.

Re: Using WAS7 with A5v8 Desktop

Thanks for the tips Steve. Yes, I've been reading the forum trying to determine the best course of action. I decided to keep my copy of v7 on my previous laptop that I have turned over to my wife as her new laptop. I thought the best thing to do was buy v8 for this new Vista laptop rather than try to use an unsupported v7. This also will allow my wifes laptop to access the desktop applications I have installed at the office and I can access the applications using my new v8.

Now I am wondering how I am going to handle my tendency to make ongoing changes to the application from my laptop and then update the files on the office server. Now that I am using Vista an A5v8 on my laptop I will have to be careful not to use features that are incompatible with the earlier versions. And this is just with the desktop apps. I am about to start working on the web side, which makes this transition to Vista even more of a PITA.

I think I will try some experimental web applications using my new v8 and see if they will run with the WAS v7 I already have. Either that, or I will have to Remote Desktop to my other computer that has A5v7 and use that to develop the web applications. First, I will try using v8 to design the components and then open the project in the v7 software and publish from there. I just need to know what to avoid in v8. I think I'll study the "what's new" section and make a list of things to avoid until such time as I upgrade to the v8 AS.

          Thanks again,
          Sean
