Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Compatibility Help Please

I have just bought v9 package a couple of weeks back but Im thinking of buying v10 in the near future but before I do I would like to know if my needs would be met.

I understand that one licence allows you to install on 2 machines.
At the moment I have xp on my work laptop and xp on my old desktop. I would be developing the app I have in mind on my xp desktop but was wondering if in the near future I invest in a new desktop with windows 7 installed, will the app that was made on the xp machine run on the new windows machine?

Also I will be giving a copy of the app to a couple of my sons for their use so would also like to know if the app that I make in v10 on an xp machine also run on a vista machine?

Now this is the most important one because I am limited to a small notebook running xp for my work. If I make an app later on the windows 7 machine, will it run on the xp machine?

    Thanks in advance

    Re: Compatibility Help Please

I don't have experience yet with Windows 7 as I am just about to put together a new machine with it. But from the other threads on this board, most things in Alpha 5v9 appear to work except the PDF driver. So if you are planning to use that option then you might have a problem. Have not seen anyone try it with Windows 7 Pro to see if the XP compatible mode will solve the PDF problem. However, the caveat would be that v10 is the release that will be Win7 compatible.

Version 9 is Vista compatible but if you give your sons a copy, they would need their own license. Or you would need to get a runtime license.

And as a side note, the 2 machine limit is specifically stated that it is a license for ONE person to use on their 2nd machine when not using their 1st machine. It is not a full 2 machine license. It was done this way for developers who typically work on their desktop but need to be able to make changes on their notebook when at a clients location.

    Hopefully I've answered your questions.

      Re: Compatibility Help Please

      Thanks for the reply Doug,

I understand the licence issue and was planing the runtime package as I have now with v9.

I am more interested in v10 not v9.

Mainly if I develop on xp with v10 can the app I make be used or will it work on windows 7.

If I develop with v10 on windows7 with the app I developed on windows 7 work ok on xp.

      Thanks again.

As long as they are both the same version you should be good to go.

Thank you for your time Doug,
          Much appreciated.

I am not doubting you Doug but I have to be sure. I am not in a position to be wasting money and time.

I dont know, maybe it's like trying to get a 360 game to play on an old xbox. I have to be sure here otherwise I spend money or waste a long time sat behind the pc screen for nothing.

At the end of the day I am trying to find out if I am wasting my time and money buying v10 to run on the windows7 os, spending months developing an application to find the end result will not run on the XP os.

A Backward also farward compatable Windows7/XP OS application. Can it do it?

Can anyone confirm that an application built in v10 running on windows 7,
run ok on widows XP and vista running the same version of AV10 or its runtime?

Can anyone also confirm if an application built in v10 running on XP.
run ok on windows 7 running the same version of AV10 or its runtime?

The XP os will be around for sometime yet and there are lots of folk who will have a hard job of getting away from it.

            Re: Compatibility Help Please

Doug is correct in that there shouldn't be any major issues with functionality. However, even a different 'theme' can make an app look different on different computers. I've designed apps that look great on my Vista machine but look 'washed out' on my XP machine. But that probably isn't what you mean.

Perhaps the best way to get a satisfactory, if not definitive, answer is to contact sales at alpha by email telling them you're interested in upgrading but listing your concerns.

Done. I ony hope the reply is a good one. It would be hard to get away from using the Alphs product now.

Thanks again for both your replys
