Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Dummy Form

I have a patient database which has several forms. On any given clinic visit, I would like to print out a form which is the same as the data entry form which I have in A5. Ideally, I would print a form with information frmo the parent table in the header of the form, but then pring only the field labels and a blank to fill in for the fields which will be captured on this office visit. I want to print out this form with the appropriate blanks for each patient in that clinic.

Is there a simple way to copy a form to a report, basing it on the parent table and leave blanks for the child table fields?

    Thank you!

The first thought that comes to mind is to make another set with the same tables, but change the linkages to the child tables so no data is ever found in the child tables.

Then copy the report to that set and you should get the desired effect.

I would make the name of that report to include the idea that all child records are left behind. (pun intended)

If you make a change to the original report, all you have to do is copy from original to the new one.

Al, thank you. I thought about this, but the set contains four tables and there are 4 forms, each with 3 different child tables. You can see that soon, the number of dummy tables will be large.

Would be nice to find some more elegant way to do it.

I still see one new set and 4 reports.

But to do it more elegantly, you can use the OnPrintInit event and set

        topparent:<YourFieldObjectName>.Object.Visible = .f.

        for the data object

I'd pass a variable(shared/global) saying if you want to see these objects and set the properties accordingly.

ps - using the object explorer is very helpful

        Edit:
        David

or better yet create a calc field
        blank_value = ""

and use this code in the OnPrintInit
        topparent:<YourFieldObjectName>.Entry.Name ="CALC->blank_value"

then all of the other properties still show... - borders.....

John - Thanks for the import portion - got caught up in the other part and forgot to include it.. That is a nifty way to move from a form to a report....

          1. create a new report based on the set
          2. choose create a blank report
          3. go to the detail section and choose (from the menu)
          report, import, form
          4. import your form and make any adjustments
          5. remove/adjust the child info by changing the fields to lines or frames
to be filled in. Now, save the report
Note: we often do this type of thing for our clients and usually provide
an xdialog box for them to select which report to print
