Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Out of context error

    I have a script that uses an xdialog to select items from a list view. Once selected a number of actions occur which updates about 6 different tables depending on which table is needed. I have a snag in that I get an error on a particular query_create() telling me cannot create function is out of context.

    It all works fine until the list needs to follow the Select case Whichtable = Equipment. From there it also works fine until the T3.query_create line. I am presuming there is something wrong with the query.filter which is

    query.filter = "LID = val(var->MYID).and.loanitemid = Val(var->LLID)"

    I can actually get it to work when I change the filter to be only "LID = val(var->MYID)" but this may not get the specific record that I need to change at the time

    I have attached the script and the tables, but you wont be able to run it without the tables concerned which are quite large. If someone can see the issue before I do this that would be great

    Re: Out of context error

    Mark, don't have time to review this now, but you should review your script with an eye open to the fact that all disk activity will be multitasked by Windows. If you're hitting the same table more than once it's likely you have a timing issue. Work being done in earlier parts of your script may not be finished by the time the script gets to a later section that hits the same table. Another way to express this is to tell you that the script will not stop while a query is being run, records are being fetched, and then changes saved... it's easily possible that all of your queries are running in different threads concurrently.

      Re: Out of context error

      Thanks for the quick reply. In trying to nut this out I actually thought it may be a table open isssue, so I trapped the particular table and checked first and got a heathly closed flag. I thought it may have been multi issue, but when I give it a simple task for only one record that matches the criteria and follows that path, the error occurs.

      If I change the query filter as described in my post it works fine all the way with all tables not matter what path the select takes

      I will look at a restructure that handles one thread completely befor moving to the next

        Re: Out of context error

        I can't get into Alpha at the moment but I do notice two things.

        The construct in Alpha is

        select
        case something
        'statements

        case something else
        'statements

        end select

        and you have

        select case whichtable
        case whichtable = "Equipment"

        The part in red seems incorrect but is probably being ignored.

        Also you have no spaces before or after the .and. in the problem filter where you do in the others.

        Code:
        query.filter = "LID = val(var->MYID) .and. loanitemid = Val(var->LLID)"
        Not sure if that would cause the problem.

        As a side note, I am in the habit of writing such filter expressions as

        query.filter = "LID = "+val(Var->MYID)+" .and. LoanitemID = "+val(Var->LLID)

        to ensure that the variables contents are substituted for the variable in string expressions.
        There can be only one.

          Re: Out of context error

          Thank you Stan - it was the query filter. I cahnged to your suggestion and it now works fine

          While the select case was wrong, it made no difference and neither did the spaces
