Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Go From Browse To Form

I want to show records in a browse for viewing purposes only and after selecting record to edit I want to open the form with selected record's data for editing purposes. Can't find way to do this. Any ideas?

    Thanks

How about you put a button on the browse to open a form for that record?

Use the browses OnRowDblClick event to define the appropriate action(s). You can have the event call a new form for editing purposes. Or you can have the event alter the data entry style and/or data entry restrictions properties of the parent form for the embedded browse to permit direct editing of the record with the browse focus and being simultaneously displayed by the form.

Thanks Keith for the idea, but since browses only show columns I can't find the way or the place to add a button, any suggestion.

I have already tried this but it does not work.
Although I am confident that code for opening form was right I'll verify it again. I get no response when doubleclicking.

          Thanks

Re: Go From Browse To Form

Ok DRW, the trick is that the browse has to be embedded in a form, this way dobleclking the row will work. In a stand alone browse it does not.

            Thanks again

No, it doesn't just apply to embedded browses unless something has changed from V9 to V10 (I'm using V9). You can open a saved browse (i.e. stand alone) and use the browse OnRowDblClick event to open a form for editing the record contents.

Re: Go From Browse To Form

I use Browses with embedded buttons all the time for the exact purpose you mentioned.

                Here is an example...

First setup the button in the browse. Here is a video that shows you how...

                http://www.ajaxvideotutorials.com/vi...y/BuildBrowse/

Once you add the button to the browse view take the browse into design mode. Click the "Browse" button at the top of the screen next to the File, Edit, etc. Then select "Events", and then Select "Events" again.(shown in the picture) Once you click the Events button Then you will see a button_click function has already been added to the code. HEre is the code I use to open the form I want and show the record I clicked the button for.

Let me know if you have any questions. The video does a good job of explaining everything.

                Code:
                FUNCTION DATE_END_ButtonClick AS V ( event AS C, data AS C , row AS N )
'DESCRIPTION: Fired when a button is clicked on a column.
'Arguments:	event	- the name of the event that is fired
' data	- the data in the column cell
' row - the row number in the browse
'this.SetViewport_Row() sets the current row to the row with the button that was clicked.
                	this.Set_Viewport_row(row)

                	dim tbl as p
                	dim id as c
                	tbl = table.current()
                	id = tbl.po_num
                	'ui_msg_box("id",str(id))

                	form.view("fAll")
                	fAll.index_set("po_num")
                	fAll.find(id)

                'Close the Browse
                brwproj.close()
                END FUNCTION

Re: Go From Browse To Form

Here is another alterative - using a UDF and creating a button on a field in the named browse.

Download the zip file and extract it to a folder. The open with V10 and open form_fc_test.

The form has a named browse called BRW1 with a button on the name field that shows only when you activate that field in a row. There explanations on the form and the code is in the form's init event as well as the browse's event event.

                  FWIW

                    Hi Tom,

This is very neat. I like it.

Is there a problem with a5.System_Mode_Set("field_popup_button_position","inside") as this does not seem to work as expected. ie image Inside field.

                      Keith

I had found the same thing. That is why it was in the OnInit code but it made no differnce whether you had Inside or Outside, the button would remain outside.

It must be something with named browses. If you create a named browse with say a date field and leave it a type in field, the Inside mode just does away with the little calendar icon. If you use outside, it is outside.

If you change the field from type in to calendar then the inside - outside holds.

I don't think it is a bug since it worked that way in Ver 9 and I know that there were a few posts on the forum about that.

It is only a minor inconvenience since as soon as the field loses focus the icon disappears.

What do you think - maybe we should start a new thread.

                      Tom

I don't know about starting a new thread but just out of curiosity this works too.
                        a5.System_Mode_Set("field_popup_button_position","")
So, is this a bug or not?

                          Code:
                          a5.System_Mode_Set("field_popup_button_position","")
is probably a default as it sets the mode to Outside

Don't know whether it is a bug or not.

                            Keith

I thought I would send in a bug report on the a5.system_mode_set problem with inside outside.

I received the following from Cian Chambliss

The 'field_popup_button_position' option was added to control just the memo & image fields that had existed before. The only reason this setting was added was for backwards compatibility, because people were complaining because we moved the memo-edit buttons OUTSIDE the cell.
While what you describe would be a nice feature, It goes beyond the original intent.
Just for the record, I did write back that somewhere on this forum, there was discussion about the inside outside and someone from Alpha (don't remember who) chimed in with the A5.system_mode_set() function. I know it was in relation (I believe) to the calendar popping up with a "date" and type in field.

Just wanted to complete this post.
