Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Finding top 5 numbers

    Is there a formula to find the top 5 numbers within a time period?
    Like if there's an (account, date, amount) database and it has records for the full year (daily)
    How can I find the top 5 (amounts) for an account during the year, I need to find the date and the amount for the top 5 for each account.

    Thanks for any help

    Re: Finding top 5 numbers

    Tablemax() will tell you the top amount given a properly constructed filter. That won't help you because it only returns the one amount. You don't indicate where you want to see/use these amounts.

    Likely you'll have to use some xbasic to write the top five amount records to a temporary table and do something with that result table.

    If you need some help with the xbasic you could attach a sample table here.

    Another alternative might be to design a script which marked the top 5 amounts for each account and then just process the marked() records.

      Thanks Stan, but I'm not sure how to code tablemax() to pick up like the top nth amounts.
      Doesn't tablemax look at all records ?

      If I need those in a report, can I use tablemax in the grouping region? this way will use only the accounts in group?

      But again how do you code tablemax() to pick the top 5 or 4 .... amounts ?

        Stan;

        attached is a sample file with 2 accounts.
        The better solution for me would be to pick the top 5 (Total_initial) for each account and store those records in a separate database, including all fields.

        Is that possible ?

          Re: Finding top 5 numbers

          I think so. Just run the script (copier)and look at samp_done.

          I used total_main but you can just edit that to total_init if you you like.

          Changed attachment, got the wrong one.

            Stan;

            I don't see the script, in the zipped file was just the DBF

                Re: Finding top 5 numbers

                If a query sets the correct ordering expression can't you use an optional sub-select routine to select the top 5? I think this is available in the query genie. Naturally, you'd have to arrange the records in an inverted sequence. The top five in a sort from lowest to highest would be the 5 lowest amounts. You'd want to sort the records from highest to lowest (descending, or inverted) so the "top" five would be the highest, right?

                  Re: Finding top 5 numbers

                  I believe he wants the top 5 for each account. Using the sub-select only gets the top five overall, I believe.

                    Thank you Stan, the code works great. I understand the first part of the while statement for i = 1 TO 5, but what does the else part do
                    FOR t = 1 TO recs
                    tbl.change_begin()
                    tbl.mark()
                    tbl.change_end(.T.)
                    tbl.fetch_next()

                      Re: Finding top 5 numbers

                      The script puts the records in order by account ascending and init_total descending. If there are more than five records for an account, it marks the top five. If there are less than five records it marks them all.

                      If a new account is added and the script run within five days there wouldn't be five records for that account and the 1 to 5 would mark some records from the wrong account.
                      There can be only one.

                        Got it, I didn't think of that, having less than five days.
                        Thank you very much that works perfectly.

                          Ok. I thought he was looking for a way to get this for a single account, and since the sub-select option had not been mentioned...
