Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Relationship or Query?

Looking for general design advice. Is it easier to develop the application using set's/relationships or use filters when querying records? I have not figured out how to perform the same operation I am acomplishing with the Emp_TO_Approve form via a query although I am sure there is a way and would appreciate any examples anyone can provide.

Basically an employee logs into the app and would submit a Time Off Request via form "Emp_Time_Off" and whoever they select in the "Submit To" field will be assigned the request. At some point the supervisor woild open form Emp_TO_Approve to approve the requests. The browse on Emp_TO_Approve only displays requests submitted to the particular supervisor currently logged on.

    Supervisor
    Username: t1
    Password: 1

    Employee
    Username: t2
    Password: 2

Is there a better way to only show the supervisor the requests submitted to them (A query rather than a defining it via a set)? I would like to have as few a sets as possible but will do whatever I need to optimize performance.

This app is a total WIP so don't mind the GUI at this point.

F.Y.I - Most forms have a hotspot to close them and return to the control panel.

    Re: Relationship or Query?

    Scott,

If you only want the manager to see their own employees requests, I would remove the top level table and base the form on a set
    empto
    |--> emp1

In the button that opens the form Emp_TO_Approve run a "base filter" for toassignedto = the current manager. A base filter can't be changed by the user.

Or you could leave the set as it is and run the base filter on empid = current manager.

    Bill.

      Re: Relationship or Query?

I believe this causes a problem when trying to show the employees name who submitted the form. In the Empto table the "Empid" field contains the submitting employees ID although to display there name I need to do a lookup from the EMP table.

Can I do this via a Lookupc?

I have been playing around with it with no success. Any ideas?

        Re: Relationship or Query?

In the Emp_TO_Approve form there is a calculated field for the submitting emplyee on the linked Emp1 table. That looks fine.

You could replace that calc field with another calc field that did a lookup to get employee name, but no need to.

I have not logged on as a manager, so have not looked at your sample data.

        Bill.

Bill, correct me if I am wrong but I am not be able to delete the parent table from the current set, correct? I tried to delete it and it does not let me. If I recreate with a new set/form as you suggested the calculation I used in the original configuration does not work. Any ideas?

            Re: Relationship or Query?

No, you can't delete the parent in a set structure, so a new set must be created.

When you created the new set you may not have used the emp1 alias for the emp table that is linked as child to empto. The calc field is looking for the emp1 alias. If the alias is now emp, just edit the calc field to change the alias name to emp.

            Bill.
