Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Running Totals

I have a table of saving account activities. Some of the fields are: Trans_Date, Total_Amt, Federal_WH, State_WH, Net_Available, etc. A report shows all of the fields, one record at a time. I want to show the running total of the numeric fields after each record has been printed.

However, I don't know how to activate the function "Calculate running value". It is dimly lit when I choose to print one of the fields, but I see no way to activate that option.

Should I ben in the Detail section of the report, or should I be in a Group section of the report, or should I be somewhere else?

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Re: Running Totals

If you want a total it would normally be in the footer, either group footer, page footer or report footer. This kind of makes sense as you wouldn't put a total in the detail section.

      Re: Running Totals

on the drag and drop list, activate the genie in the upper left corner and then drag and drop to the detail section

when dropping into non -detail band, the option is automagically called.

you need to turn on the wizard prior to dropping into the detail section.

        Re: Running Totals

I should have read the question more closely. I didn't know running total was there. I can't get it to work either. Al, I tried your method, still inactive on the genie. Looks like I'll have to play with that a bit.

Can someone help with this?....looks like this never got answered and I'm seeing the same. "Calculate running value" dimmed out....just want a simple running value off of a calculated field in a report.

              Re: Running Totals

Don't use the genie. In the report in design mode, go to toolbar XY and make a calculated field:
              Code:
              cf_run_total = run_total(name_of_your_numeric_field_to_total)
Have the field in the detail section of your report and drag that calculated to your report in the detail section and it will run total the field pointed to.

Or use genie, chose total and then the grayed out run_total will show, choose that and finish and go back and delete the groupings in the expression the genie produces leaving only the pointing field.

choose other summary function rather thanvalue in the field.
This should allow you to use the running total stuff.

                  Re: Running Totals

In the detail section of the report place a calculated field
                  like this: run_total(Trx_Amount,grp->Grand,grp->Detail)
As Al previously stated, the genie will talk you through this.
This calculated running total displays running totals for the
                  entire report as follows
                  trxid trx_amount running total
                  001 100 100
                  002 200 300
                  003 300 600
This is a very simple matter for a5's built in functionality

                    Re: Running Totals

                    Mark,
Check the"total of the field" rather than "value of the field" and the
                    runningtotal will be available
