Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Roll Call Ideas Please!!!

    Hi All,

I would appreciate some design ideas for a Roll Call system.

Namely a department is selected from a combo box, to display all names in selected department with a check box to mark off each person's presence. There would have to be a date as this would be done on a daily basis. Simplicity is the key to this.

This could be just about anything you could think of, but if you want simple, how about just a browse of the table. You don't need a check box column, though you could have one, but you could put a button when clicked it will stamp the date in the date field.

I would probably start trying to use an xdialog multi-select checkbox listbox. It would open and when closed/saved it would write to a roll-call table with the date (date field) and who was present (memo field). If wanted, these could also be brought up as a list again to view either via xdialog or a form.

        Keith,

Somebody asked something similar last September, I think. Not sure what post it was. But here is a jiffy example that I built back then might give you a starting point...

I see that Peter has already given you a sample.

But since I had this ready , I thought you might not mind another example.

Just a differnt way of doing what you want.

            Keith

Here is a revised zip file, with some changes to ease the user input. Now as soon as you select a Dept Id, the employee list for that department will open ( you don't have to use the button). Also, you cannot enter an employee as present more than one time.

I have also added a onrowdblclick event for the browse to delete an employee erroneously entered as present. It opens a dialog form and lets the user delete a record (or just close without deleting)

I asked for some ideas and what came back is just amazing.

A BIG Thank You, to all who have responded to my request. You have given me some great ideas to work with and the samples were very useful too.

What is interesting about these suggestions is that they will also help in other projects I am working on at the same time.

Based on one of the other tables, I played and created the attached. When you open it should simply go straight to an xdialog. if you select department it filters from there. That is all it does. I would surmise that when select save it would save those that are checked.

I thought you asked for simple..
Didn't ask for fancy.. or fancier..or fanciest..
Here is simple, slightly on the fancy side. May have been shown on the other attachments already (haven't opened any yet).

                    Hi Gabe,

Yes this is fancy and is another of your clever videos which unfortunately miss the mark.

Thanks for the input, it was an interesting use of Xdialog.

If you would care to share the code, I'm sure there will be others who could learn from your skills.

It is not fancy.. it was put in a hurry.. to make it fancy I need to re-arrange few things and code it to move items back and forth.. it will take a little while to do. Given the time, I will and post. Right now, is rather half-cooked. Didn't know if it was of any interest.

                        Gabe,

I'm sure it took longer to make the video than it would have taken to zip your little app and post it here.

You always seem to be too busy just after you have spent time in creating your suggestions. What a shame your time management skills don't match your development skills!!

                          Hi Keith,

I don't see it that way. How Gabe wants to present his ideas is his option. Why he created a video instead of the file you expected, I don't know. I do know, your comment may have burned a bridge. A better choice would have been to thank Gabe for his offering and request a zipped demo. :)

                            Hi Ken,

How are you? Long time no chat.

Actually, I thought I had done just that, please see earlier reply.

Yes you are right, Gabe does have a choice, and I'm sure he will pop and and give help to me and others in the future.

Unfortunately my comments are not unfounded as Gabe has built himself a reputation that has been commented on before by others.

Perhaps you might enjoy being teased as to what can be done with Alpha when you are asking for help and then being shown a video instead of a working sample. Gabe has done this many times before, I thought he had stopped. My mistake. His lack of follow up when promised is legendary.

Gabe has broad shoulders, if I have said anything that is not true then I apologise.

You are correct! Thank you. My time management skills stink.
I will submit a video of my lousy time management skills.

                              Pondering:
How could one be good with alpha and yet bad with time management?
Answer: Maybe it is not possible to develop good time-management applications with alpha.
                              Is it?
