Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Mysql is running sooooo... slow

I have a small app with about a dozen sql tables all indexed with integer fields. Everything I do that's data related is so slow that my app will be unusable when complete. I'm talking about several seconds when clicking on a browse. and 10-15 seconds when loading a form.

I'm not an expert yet on either a5 or sql so I'm hoping someone knows if it's a5 being slow or mysql. When I use pgpadmin Everything is almost instantaneous.

    any ideas would be welcome?

I'm happy to attach the app if that would help.

I'm guessing that there aren't a lot of mysql users out there.

      Hi Lee

I guess most people using MySQL are doing so in the web environment rather than the desktop.

Are you using active linked tables?

It is probably the way you constructed your application. I use MySQL as the back end but I try to restrict each form to one table only. I also use Xdialog and native SQL calls instead of active link tables but in my tests in the past active link tables worked fine on single tables but not very well with large sets.

I just saw that 10.5 has a new feature for "optimized active link sets" -- active link sets now run 4-5x faster than they did before. That may solve your issue.

Ok it's official. I will never ever ever try to use Mysql in a desktop application. I switched to native files and my miriad of obscure errors went away and now I'm almost finished with my project.

This morning I was ready to throw in the towel and become a dancer or maybe a hot dog vendor but now I'm saved.

Repeat, never try to use mysql with a desktop application.(unless you need just 1 more reason to kill yourself)

Re: Mysql is running sooooo... slow

              hi,
I use both ms sql and mysql on alpha5 desktop for the last 3 years.
i meant 100% on sql, except one parameter.dbf/

i enjoy the speed and robustness of them, the only issue that bother me for the last 3 plus years is the lack of ability to place a sql browse on the form "easily" like the dbf table.

i struggle every time and ending up using a list boxes in place of ordinary browse. With version 10.5 grid component on desktop, it open up all the possibilities.

Having said that, i am moving toward web rather than desktop, but i sincerely appreciate every effort Selwyn and his team does.

I would be happy to assist you in anyway or share with you some of the concept i use, which i classified being non conventional,
beside ordinary connection, i allow connection to multiple server(s) during initial log on, user can select which server he/she want to attach to, as we mirrored several servers together (in different city), this make it very nice for Houston users connect to Houston Server and Seattle users connect to Seattle office server.

I find it very flexible, which we create script from central office to update all those servers (typical 2 to 5 seconds delay), which is ok for most part as being non critical mission viewing, while when update or append or insert, we would send it direct to central server,in which would update all server (5 of them) within seconds.
original the update where done by alpha, further it was re written by one of our staff in java and has been in use for over 3 years.

That is ultimately the dream to have multiple backup across.

We never use passive or active table,it is probably myself not ever want to touch dbf table ? at the end my app remain very small, never growth is the target. Beside stand alone in local office, all remote users are connected to terminal server as RDP and that is also being used here with alpha version 5 for many years.

Honestly very stable and especially the sql, never cry, never slow
              just nothing but good report.

              Thanks you Alpha 5
