Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise

    Hello-
IT department at my company is inquiring if Alpha database version 9 and 10 is compatible with Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise. Also if it can operate on 64 bit. Does anyone know if this is possible?

    Thanks-

    Neecy

Re: Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise

    Hi Neecy,

A little more information would be nice.

1 are you using the server to just hold the data?
2 Do you have other computers for work stations?
3 are you going to shadow your databases?
4 are you planniong to do development work directly on the server?
5 anything else you can tell us??

All in all, it should be fine in any case. Others may have more experience with this particular server configuration.

Re: Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise

      Hi DaveM-

Here's the reply from our IT:

1 Are you using the server to just hold the data? No, it is a MS terminal server.
2 Do you have other computers for work stations? No, just thin clients. There is a very slight possibility in the future.

3 are you going to shadow your databases? No work stations so no shadowing. (We tested shadowing on the server)
4 are you planniong to do development work directly on the server? Some times but we do have one workstation dedicated for development then the entire DB is transferred to the server.
5 Anything else you can tell us? Is 64 bit possible and is there someone who is using 64 bit we could glean information from?
Any known issues running MS SQL server? We are planning on converting the data storage to SQL in the next couple of years.

Yes, they will both run on 8-R2 T/S with the following considerations

in V9, you may have to set it to run in XP Compatibility mode
in V9, the Alpha printer driver will not work or work right - like saving a document to PDF and then opening it

        V10 will run normally

however, note that Alpha is 32 bit, and will run in 32 bit mode

As a side note: wouldn't it be nice if Alpha were set up to run in either mode?? I mean, on installation, it would automatically know which mode it should be in and install either system as needed so print, etc. would work?

Note: I think printing to a printer is fine(from what I have read) and have done that on a 64 bit system. I do not have a need for pdf's so far.

Re: Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise

I have a question about a5 v12 (alpha anywhere). just to satisfy my boss, he asked me to install the a5 development and develop the mobile demo app using the northwind SQL database. So I installed it on the server 2008. got the app server also installed and activated. But when I click on remote testing this is what I get:
The requested URL /LivePreview/Northwind5xApp_PageLayoutLivePreview.a5w was not found on this server. After turning off all the safety feature of the webbrowser, I was able to view the app in the working preview. Please help... and once again, I thank you in advance for your advice.
