Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    word extraction with non-constant deliminator

    I've search and played, and tried until I'm tired and at my end. In the following example, I am trying to collect the second "word" (word following many periods) from the list selection. With the deliminator being non-constant, and each word having inherant periods, I'm drawing a complete blank. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Code:
    dim vT as C
    vT=<<%a%
    comcast.net.......smtp.comcast.net
    adelphia.com......smtp.adelphia.com
    zero.net..........smtp.zero.com
    sbcglobal.net.....mail.sbcyahoo.com
    sbcglobal.net.....smtp.yahoo.net
    %a%

    dim vchoice as c
    vchoice=ui_get_list2("","",vT)

    dim vsmtp as C
    vsmtp =

    Hi Mike,

    A couple of ways possibly....does the second word always follow after at least 2 periods (or were the periods just so show us the differences between the 2 words?). Also, does the 2nd word always have either smtp or mail as the first part of it?

      I cheated.

      Code:
      dim vT as C
      vT=<<%a%
      comcast.net.......smtp.comcast.net
      adelphia.com......smtp.adelphia.com

      %a%

      dim vchoice as c
      vchoice=ui_get_list2("","",vT)
      'ui_msg_box("",vChoice)

      dim vsmtp as C
      vsmtp = strtran(vChoice,left(vChoice,18),"")
      ui_msg_box("",vsmtp)

        One way:

        Code:
        dim vT as C
        vT=<<%a%
        comcast.net.......smtp.comcast.net
        adelphia.com......smtp.adelphia.com
        zero.net..........smtp.zero.com
        sbcglobal.net.....mail.sbcyahoo.com
        sbcglobal.net.....smtp.yahoo.net
        %a%

        dim vTOut as c = ""
        for each line in vT
        	dotcount = occurs(".", line)
        	dotcount = dotcount - 2
        	StartPos = at(".",line, dotcount) + 1
        	line = substr(line, StartPos, 50)
        	vTOut = vTout + line + crlf()
        next

        dim vchoice as c
        vchoice=ui_get_list2("","",vTOut)

          I am looking at this and about 10 different things came to mind all colliding at the same time creating sort of a nuclear fusion in my head, so let's start with few:
          Code:
          x="comcast.net..........smtp.comcast.net"
          ?word(stritran(x,trailing(x,2),"|"),2,"|")
          = "smtp.comcast.net"
          Another way:
          Code:
          x="comcast.net...........smtp.comcast.net"
          ?if(asc(lastword(x,".."))=46,right(lastword(x,".."),len(lastword(x,".."))-1),lastword(x,".."))
          = "smtp.comcast.net"
          Slightly modified:
          Code:
          x="comcast.net...........smtp.comcast.net"
          ?if(asc(lastword(x,".."))=46,substr(lastword(x,".."),2),lastword(x,".."))
          = "smtp.comcast.net"
          And another:
          Code:
          dim vT as C
          vT=<<%a%
          comcast.net.......smtp.comcast.net
          adelphia.com......smtp.adelphia.com
          zero.net..........smtp.zero.com
          sbcglobal.net.....mail.sbcyahoo.com
          sbcglobal.net.....smtp.yahoo.net
          %a%

          for i=1 to 10
          vt=strtran(vt,"..","|")
          vt=strtran(vt,"|.","|")
          vt=strtran(vt,"||","|")
          next
          msgbox(vt)
          There a bunch of other functions that just don't seem to work in v8.

            Thanks guys. I was brain dead yesterday.

            Andy,
            You "cheating" works great because I am using a padr() to set the number of characters before the second word to a constant.

            Steve,
            I need the choice list to have the list with both words and the extract to be of the choice from the list.

            Gabriel,
            I'm thinking your first example would work great... IF TRAILING() ACTUALLY WORKED IN V10...WHICH IT DOES NOT......bug.....bug.....bug!!!

              I'd like to help more, but I guess I don't understand. Can you provide an example?

                Steve,
                Thanks, but no more needed. I'll use Andy's suggestion as that should work well. And I guess I thought I did provide and example.

                I filed bug report regarding trailing() not working in v10. He confirmed and will fix. (amazing attention they give!!)
