Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Fatal error running a5_ajax_grid(): Empty expression

A grid that was working suddenly stopped working after I applied the latest patch on my local computer, i have NOT applied it to the server.

    Nothing else at all changed.

Is this a duh..... install the patch on the server?

    dr,
Desktop, server, runtimes all should have the same version/builds, otherwise issues will crop up as you've obviously noticed.

(note--this is a desktop forum, not the web forum! :) )

Thanks for confirming. And yes, I apparently posted a couple of things that should have been on the web side..... ah, I'm human!

Re: Fatal error running a5_ajax_grid(): Empty expression

yeah, I know, sounds totally fictitious.
          Here's another one:
We are dumping Alpha 5 for this project. Going to QuickBase. I was able to replicate a week's work on Alpha in one day on QB.

Their forms are simplistic and suck, but they work! Also, you can add a field to a table & then add it to a grid! (yeah, pardon me for 'poor planning' but we're shooting at a moving target, and the app needs that sort of flexibility)

And I've yet to come across a single error in QB. I was getting them all over the place in the Alpha project (and paid a support person to find that I had encountered and "undocumented bug", so FMITA).

It's not like I was doing ANYTHING complicated, just tables with forms, minimal relationships, no indexing, just really simple stuff with LOTS of fields

So, I'm going to let the expensive Alpha software sit here for a while, and ignore it.

I feel like I have this cool sports car in the garage, but can't drive it because every time I leave the driveway, the left front wheel falls off.

When a few more patches have been released, I'll try it again.

This experience has been so reminiscent of MiniVend, late 90's.... anyone remember those days?

Time to go soak my head.

          BFN!
          ;)

I can understand the why of your decision.....but with QuickBase's recurring fee of at least $299/month (maybe I misunderstood their price structure?), it sure sounds like an expensive way to go in the end....but whatever works for you is what has to be considered overall.

Regardless, good luck with your endeavors. :)

Re: Fatal error running a5_ajax_grid(): Empty expression

Thanks for the reply - yes, it's $299 - STARTING price... but the server we were running Alpha on cost almost that much a month (Rackspace is high, but reliable, and this is a HIPAA-compliance situation)
QB's security certainly seems up to snuff (I'm not the one doing the evaluation, someone much more critical of the server-side issues takes care of that, I'm just the lowly programmer....)

The other expense to consider is MY time. I've put in 2 months on this app, and it was actually really close.... until I applied the latest patch, which blew all my forms out of the water. And it took me a while to come to grips with tossing 250-300 hours into the toilet. ( I read several hundred pages of documentation & watched most of the videos before starting the project, that's an investment I was loathe to throw away, which is why I'm hoping that the Alpha developers stabilize the product at some point later this year, as I've got a couple of other projects on the horizon)

Enough bitching & moaning, time to get back to work.

              Cheers! :)
