Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Oh Where, Oh Where have my indexes gone?

When right clicking the table name and selecting Define Indexes, there are no indexes. Yet, when I checked the folder, the index file is there.

Que Pasa?? Updating indexes does not help. I copied the CDX file from the backup and again, it appears in the folder but no in the table. Database compound does not help either.

    Thank you for the suggestions.

Re: Oh Where, Oh Where have my indexes gone?

Please, do not "compound" your database,... compact it instead! "Compounding" the database might "compound" your problems!

The disappearing indexes (indices) is a subject that has been covered in compounding details in the past in many threads which I encourage you to read but in a nutshell and whether you agree with this draconian policy or not, if an index is corrupt for any reason alpha does not take hostages. It will kill the darn index.
So, the question becomes what corrupts indices, besides booze, liquor and dope?
Many things, most commonly if the index is based on a variable, a lousy expression, a bad filter and or order etc.

Kenn, are any of the index names longer than 10 chars? You may have corrupted dictionaries, since the long index names will be stored there and may be inaccessible to Alpha. The general recommendation is to never use index names longer than 10 characters.

While it may not do you any good in this circumstance.....

Check out Cal Locklin's Index Rebuild Utiity. It saves a definition of all of your indices in a function and will rebuild them "from scratch". It is a GREAT utility.

        Regards,

          Hi Tom,

Most are not but a couple are 12 characters. The most complex is field1 + Field2. There are no variables or any other concoctions. The fact that 2 indexes are more than 10 characters, that sould only cause a problem with the particular index.

I have 2 versions of the app, a working version (w/v) and a development version (d/v). The indexes in the w/v work fine. It's the d/v that appears to be corrupt but I hav eno idea how or where the problem lies. The question is, what is it that is causing the indexes to not show in the table (parent table)?

I also know there are tons of index posts and searching the message board is extremely time consuming. I tried googling "indexes disappear alpha five" but found nothing recent or close to my situation.

          Thanks for the suggestions

p.s. Gabe, Sorry about 'compound', I meant 'compact'.

            Kenn:
I think, given the fact that there were quite a bit of questions about indexes, the help file added a page in reference to that. And I knew you meant compact.

            See this.

having an index file just means that once upon a time you maybe had an index present....if they went "south" the file would still be there.

Yeah, but did you then right click in whitespace while on the Tables/Sets tab and add the table in question back again??? (or use xbasic to do the same). Alpha won't see the new file (table) unless this is done in many instances. Something else to try at least.

Re: Oh Where, Oh Where have my indexes gone?

Personally, I recommend either using Cal's autoindex create/rebuild or do a roll your own

In my own use, the most common cause for losing an index is sending a query that cannot be resolved by Alpha.

I usually do an auto rebuild everyday, either when the first user logs on for the day, or in a maintenance program run at night from task manager

another thing that happens is the index name is changed, and the rebuild rebuilds all indexes from scratch

I've been using Cal's for maybe 6 years at a hospital that runs 24/7. I do an auto run at every shift change (3 times every 24 hours)

                  Hi Martin,

I didn't know that had to be done. No doubt that is my problem.

                  Thanks.

Last but not least, to Gabe,

Thank you for the link. Some interesting information.
