Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Creating Expression with Multiple Field Values

Having fooled around with some of the parameters available in Google Maps (http://mapki.com/wiki/Google_Map_Parameters), I'm now looking to do something ambitious. I have a form that tracks engineering inspections, and I want to be able to generate Google route maps for a list of addresses, preferably with one button click. (The route list changes day by day--or even several times during a day--as the table is constantly being overwritten with new address entries.) The Google Maps parameter for routes is "http://maps.google.com/maps?daddr=" with "+to:" between the various addresses.

What I want to do is create a URL expression that builds the aforementioned text around unique field values. For example,

    "http://maps.google.com/maps?daddr=[STATIC STARTING POINT]"+"+to:"+[ADDRESS FOR 1ST RECORD][CITY/STATE FOR 1ST RECORD]+"+to:"+[ADDRESS FOR 2ND RECORD][CITY/STATE FOR 2ND RECORD]+"+to:"+[ADDRESS FOR 3RD RECORD][CITY/STATE FOR 3RD RECORD], etc.

for as many records as are in the table. I've been reading through some of the functions, but as of yet I have not found one that outputs field values sequentially in one string. Does anyone know if this is even possible...?

And, if it is possible, I'll also need to do something to limit the number of "+to:"s to the number of records in the table.

If I am understanding you, this can be done but is dependent upon how your addresses are stored---in a table, a csv file, a comma delimited single line, a crlf list........

Regardless, you would iterate through however the list is that you want included with one of the several list processing functions, concatenating your text required by Google Maps.

I like crlf lists and then using *for_each() to process when I can.

Thanks, I'll try that if what I'm currently looking into fails. So far I've found an expression that will output the correct URL string (using reccount and nested If statements), but the length of the expression is too long and Alpha ends up truncating it anyway:

      If(reccount("memory")=1, "http://maps.google.com/maps?daddr=40.7310486742 -73.2105395850+to:"+lookup("memory", "Number = 0","Latitude")+" "+lookup("memory", "Number = 0","Longitude"),

      If(reccount("memory")=2, "http://maps.google.com/maps?daddr=40.7310486742 -73.2105395850+to:"+lookup("memory", "Number = 0","Latitude")+" "+lookup("memory", "Number = 0","Longitude")+"+to:"+lookup("memory", "Number = 1","Latitude")+" "+lookup("memory", "Number = 1","Longitude"),

      If(reccount("memory")=3, "http://maps.google.com/maps?daddr=40.7310486742 -73.2105395850+to:"+lookup("memory", "Number = 0","Latitude")+" "+lookup("memory", "Number = 0","Longitude")+"+to:"+lookup("memory", "Number = 1","Latitude")+" "+lookup("memory", "Number = 1","Longitude")+"+to:"+lookup("memory", "Number = 2","Latitude")+" "+lookup("memory", "Number = 2","Longitude"), etc. to 20 iterations...

So, separate but related question: Is there an easy way to convert a huge expression into Xbasic, or something that doesn't cap the character length of an expression? I know I can convert an action to script by right-clicking it, but in this case I can't even get a viable action first without Alpha truncating the expression.

Try setting parts of the expression you are creating to variables prior to using the expression builder...then concatenate the variables together.....gets by the 1024 character limit of the builder.

Thanks, that worked...sort of well. The expression was so long, I had to do variables within variables. Then I strung them together and evaluated with exp(). I've got it working exactly the way I want it to now!

I sometimes have 2 or 3 filter lists that are set to variables and used just as you are doing now...and yes, the eval(your_filter_variable) is necessary (have not ever used exp()--are you sure you didn't mean eval()?)---sorry not to have mentioned that. :o
