Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Cannot Edit Field Rules

I would like to create Field Rules for a Table.

Presently - I open the database then right click on a table to "edit the field rules". After creating a few, they get clobbered upon exiting. (If I use the "Design: Field Rules" option I get the same reulsts.) Any subsequent retries end up with an error of:

Error The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process
"MyTableNameAndPath DD" occurred while trying to start application.

Only if I exit Alpha5 V10 can I open "Edit Table Rules" again. All changes previously saved are lost and anything entered is now saved once again ... temporarily. If I close the Table and reopen it to check my work, I get the above error. Attacking this problem from other directions results in similar errors. They all tell me in essence that the Table is being used by another process.

I have no "start up" script.
    I just did a complete Uninstall/reinstall.

Any ideas as to what's happening?

    Frank

    Re: Cannot Edit Field Rules

I would shut down (not restart), then re-install the last Alpha5update. You haven't just update it, have you? Could that be the problem?

After you re-install the Alpha5 update... try it again.

What release and build are you using?

      Re: Cannot Edit Field Rules

I've tried everything - several times and several ways.

      And yes - I just did a complete uninstall/reinstall. I'm on Version 10.5 , Build 3345 Addins: Build 3595

As of 09/20/10, that's about as current as you can get.

My question remains - why does Alpha 5 think this Table is busy by another application? I can assure you it is not. Not on my account anyway. Better question - how do i tell Alppha 5 I never touched the Table - I'm simply trying to Create/Edit Field Rules?

        Re: Cannot Edit Field Rules

I would install an update like 3307... back off a couple of releases... just to see if that's the problem.

Do you have a back up of the database to a date where you were not having problems? What was that date? What was the Alpha5 release at that point?

Have you tried packing the table?

          Re: Cannot Edit Field Rules

Cannot Edit Field Rules has been Resolved.

I was able to overcome being inexplicably "locked out" of Field Rules Creation for one of my Tables by Alpha 5. If you right click the Table, at the bottom of the drop down list is an option to "Restore Prior Field Rules". After browsing the contents, I was able to find a version that related to the comprehensive changes I had made earlier. (My Version was empty and was somewhere in the middle of the list. I find this suspect because the list is in Version # order and Version #'s are Date and Time sensitive. My current Version is now the highest # in ascending order.)

This does not explain the "lock out", but it got me back in business.

p.s. not to be overlooked, I found two indices I built for this table but never really used. I deleted them. I don't know if this was relative to the fix as I had performed both actions in the same session.
