Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Capture numeric value in character variable

    I have a calculated numeric variable (up to three positive places) which I want to add to the last three places (with appropriate character 0s) in a string variable (SS) of 8 places. Using VAL(substr(ss,6,3) to get the original starting value to be saved, I need to add the calculated numerical to this value.
    Using STR(), I have not been able to capture the calculated numeric value in order to add to my string variable SS.
    How should I approach this design?

    Show us an example, specify the data types as you go.

    the use of the word "add" when talking about a string of characters is ambiguous. Please clarify. Are you doing arithmetic addition, or are you really talking about "concatenation" ?

      Part_no as c 8 characters long in original table
      Calculation as n
      Example: Part_no = 44015087
      Through other calculations (n=8) the part number has to be changed to 4401595 (add 8 to original last three characters)and saved into another table.
      In all cases it is the last three characters of the part number that are to be changed.

        Hi Clifford,

        Try this in the Interactive window.

        x="44015087"
        ?x
        = "44015087"

        y=val(x)+8
        ?y
        = 44015095

        Not quite sure how you get 595 when you add 8 to 087 unless that is a typo.

          Hi, Keith.

          If Clifford's 3 digit calc value is big enough it will change the 5th digit of his 8 digit part number using your approach. So far his specification of how he wants this handled is inadequate to tell us whether that's ok, or whether he has something else in mind. It seems that he wants to "freeze" the first five digits of the part number no matter what, but its also possible he hasn't considered what will happen when a large enough calc value is added to the value of digits 6, 7, & 8. i.e what happens when the sum can't be expressed in only 3 digits? That's one reason I asked for some sample data.

            Hi Tom,

            Must admit there is an element of confusion on my part also. My reason for further explanation on how the extra 500 was arrived at.

              SORRY -- the 500 is bogus! Max that will ever occur in the last three positions is 999 (there is a limit outside of this discussion). The first five places are fixed in each calculation.

                Re: Capture numeric value in character variable

                Keith, your solution works. I was trying to change the last three places only by using a substr(), whereas using the entire value works fine. Thanks.
