Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Posting issue

I have, the same thing most people have, Invoice Detail that posts to an Invoice Header table. The post rule is in the Invoice Detail Total field which is calculated from Qty * Price. When I change a line Qty or Price I get an error "Cannot Post table INVOICES. Post rule is not valid" I clear the error and Alpha then properly posts the correct amount to the Invoice Header table. So while the post rule works I can't see where the error is to make it not valid. In the rule the link fields are the same name "Invoice_No" in both tables and the number fields are all numeric.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Tom,

Can you post the Posting code to the board. Or better yet, can you upload a stripped down copy of the application. I am sure you will get help.

      Re: Posting issue

If you have a posting field rule rather than event code which posts the extension you will have to attach screenshots or the suggested sample database. If you attach screenshots use the bottom scroll bar in the rule definition area to capture all the columns. (single screenshot example attached)

        Hi

Attached is a zip file with one set of records. If you go to the Customer_Invoice_View form and change a detail record you will get the error. You also get it if you just change a record in the table, it's not tied to the form.

        thanks,
        tom

Your set definition appeared to be in one directory and the tables in another directory of the same name under the main directory.

            Hi Steve,

I think I crossed things up when making the zip file. This set should have everything in the same folder, still showing the same problem.

            Thanks,
            Tom

                Re: Posting issue

You seem to have an incomplete posting field rule to post the invoice_no_ to the invoices table. You should remove that.

If I understand what you are trying to do you want create the invoices header record by posting the invoice_no_ and the total. That won't work because the posting field rule doesn't cete records, only modifies them.

Sorry, futher examination reveals that you weren't trying to do that. Still the invalie rule is there for the invoice_no_ field.

                  Thanks Stan,

I see the error I made. somehow I had left a portion of the posting rule in the Invoice_no field and that was the rule causing the error, not the one for item total. once I removed it all works fine.
