Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Have you changed anything recently? Possibly moved the database files?
    There can be only one.

Many times when you copy files off of a CD it sets them as "Read-Only". Check the file attributes in these directories.

I am not sure just how to check the attributes of the files

tHE ATTRIBUTES OF THE FILES IS ok!! There has to SOMEONE out there who has had hard disk problems and had to download files from the outside!!!! This is what started this problem!! HELP!! HELP!! Where is Rabin when you need him?

I dont understand how A5 can give you such a useless message as this: When trying to compact the files of a database i get this message "Could not up date. Do you want to continue?" Duh!! If you say yes the file does not get updated and it puts 2 $$ in the file type - ie, .$$M. It comes up with this message for every file!! Knowing A5 there is some way to get into the file and reset the SWITCH!!?? or whatever to allow this file to be backed up!!

                  Don,

"The files is ok" doesn't tell us much.

Navigate to the drive and select the folder where the database resides. Right click on it and choose Properties.

If the Attributes: Read-Only box is solid green within a black frame, some of the files in the directory are marked Read-Only. If the Read-Only box contains a green checkmark, the directory is read only and the files may be as well.

In either case, clear the box, choose Apply, and make sure you choose to have it applied to This folder, sub-folders, etc.
                  There can be only one.

                    Don,
Whenever I have had the .$$M occur....and I knew this was happening by testing by compacting the database and having the same error message appear...it meant that no matter what I did, the only way to cure this is to use a backup of that file....and most times I had to use all the dictionary files associated with that specific table.

It indicates file corruption and can be caused by various things. In my case it was improper coding--causing Alpha not to be able to resolve something. A few times it was code I had placed in the OnInit event of a form which should not have been placed there (I now know why it should not have been placed there but when I was very new to Alpha I tried most everything!). Other times it was a bad calculated field or reference to something that Alpha could not see....which then it could not resolve.

So what to do....unless others have a different means, you are going to have to first use a backup to restore the files and then try to figure out the cause. One step at a time.
                    Mike

                      Re: COMPACTing the database

My confusion here is that the repair people backed off my databases onto a CD. All I did was to download these databases and they worked, so i immediately wanted to compact them and back them up, but i can not COMPACT them!! All of the databases wil not compact and ALL files are affected.

                        Re: COMPACTing the database

Taking files off of a CD is the main way I have heard of the File Block being added to the file's properties by Windows....it is just a checkbox or button that will change this when in properties.

Are you certain that all the files in question do not have this restriction? Makes me curious as well if say even one was still checked and Alpha tried to read the file that it could cause some form of corruption....just a thought.

When i right click on the folder containing the database, the attributes: read-only is a small solid green box within a black frame. I clear the box and choose APPLY and apply to the sub-folders also, and when i recheck the folder to see if it worked, the box is green again. In fact every folder that i check like this has the same thing and the box is green again upon rechecking!!

Under the ADVANCED button there are 2 possibilities and i am wondering if i should check the box that reads "folder is ready for archiving". The other box that reads:"for fast searching..." IS CHECKED.

I too find that if you uncheck the read only box and click apply it does not stick. When you go back into properties the check box is ticked again. However I have a few databases and some of the compact normally despite the read only attribute being ticked on the properties so I am not sure that that is the problem. I have asked about this on the forum before and the advice I was given was that a report or table was not being closed properly. I dont think Compact works on an open table.

Well I now have 4 (FOUR) databases that I can NOT COMPACT!! Dont know what to do because after awhile this will blow up on me also!!

It used to be you could go into the files and FIX ANYTHING!! Now it seems like they are getting stricter and stricter!! I just love these messages that come up and they just leave you with your mouth hanging open since you dont know what to do NOW!!

I almost know that there is probably ONE BYTE in each of my files that has this problem that needs to be reset to make the compact work!!
