Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    POS Database Development

I have been asked by a food service client to build an application to replace their current "cludgy" POS system with something much more simple. I'd like to know if anyone has done this with AlphaFive, as there are other peripherals to tie in, such as a weight scale and a touch screen and a receipt printer. The hardware is running Embedded POSReady 2009 OS but I'm sure could be replaced with a standard OS if I can find the drivers for the peripherals mentioned about. Any suggestions?

Hi Keith, good to "see" you. I'm not sure this project is one that I want to tackle, but it may have a decent market if it can be done. Simple is the operative word. Are you developing it on a regular Microsoft OS? Are you able to tie in the touch screen and a scale and receipt printer?

        Diana,

The touch screen process is the same as using a mouse. the receipt printer is just a printer that you need to set the page sizes to suit. If you want it to activate a cash drawer, this is usually done via the receipt printer. The scales, I have never worked with, but a presume they should work similar to a barcode scanner. A value is sent to the computer when activated - the value will be a weight or a code that is converted to a weight, the rest is done by the user. EG: push the button for bananas and the weight is then multiplied by the stored banana price etc.

As always, thanks for the responses Keith and Mark! I also need to find out if Alpha can run on the OS that is currently on the system, which is Embedded POSReady 2009. From what I've read it should be able to, I've downloaded a trial and will be playing with it. Mark, you said the cash drawer would be activated via the receipt printer...where would that be accomplished? Printer properties? Alpha programming?

            Re: POS Database Development

I would say yo are correct on the OS. I found this article about it http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/p...ady2009pr.mspx

My experience with the printer/cash drawaer is limited and old. I found te linkage was a cable from teh cash drawer to the receipt printer, which had various dipswitch settings. Once the printer was required to print it triggered the drawer to open

                Re: POS Database Development

I've worked on POS systems (hardware)in the past. Basically the cash drawer gets a signal to the coil that releases the locking system. I've seen it done via a printer or through a serial port. Main issue with serial port is the voltage requirement to directly engage the coil. On the printer, I believe a command would be issued to engage the cash drawer port signal. When programming the cash drawer, don't forget to check the status of the cash drawer (i.e., Open or Closed). Hope this help some.

                  Hi Manuel,

Good to know that you have worked on POS, you experience is of value.

The question here is, can Alpha run on the Embedded POSReady 2009 OS?
