Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Set Child Browse

    A5 V9
I am trying to create an embedded browse on a form based on (for now) a two table set. The parent is invoice_header and the child is members (1 to 1). When I embed a browse on the form and choose last_name from the child table, the browse is blank.

I wanted it to be populated with all the last names so I could choose a name from the embedded browse to create an invoice. I am aware that I need another table to the set, I am just trying to get past this part first.

I have been unable to get the child browse to be populated with the last names.

When I reverse the parent/child and create a 1 - 1 set with members as the parent and invoice header as the child I get the desired result of all member names listed and I can choose a name and have it filled in.

A: Since it is a 1 -1 does it matter that I reverse the order of parent/child based on the Alpha Sports model which shows invoice header as parent?

    or

B: How can I create the desired name browse from a child table in a set? (I am so new to this, if there is any code involved I will be lost)

    Thank you.

An embedded browse is not a navigation tool. A browse of a child table is just a view of the child table records related to the current parent record visible on the form.

You need to create a variable for the form, place the variable on the form, change the control type to, say, a list box. Populate the list box with values from the child table (genie helps with this). Then code the onchange event of the variable to begin a new record with the chosen value in appropriate field.
    There can be only one.

      Re: Set Child Browse

Given a 1:1 set, invoices and members, if you don't have a linking key filled in the parent, you won't see a corresponding child. So assuming that your invoice table has a field called member_id, you have to fill in that value w. the appropriate child key value. OTOH, if you reverse the set, you will see all the members, but only those invoices where the linking key has been filled in for the invoice.

        Thanks for the replies.

Yes, there is a member_id linking field.

The main purpose of this form is to enter new invoices by name and to look up an individual invoice by name if someone has a question about their bill.

The charges are on paper filled out by a member. Days/ weeks later the data entry person alphabetizes the chits then enters by member and date of charge. The thinking is with an embedded member list all the data entry person will have to do is arrow down a couple of names and select. The other issue I will have to figure out is how to auto-fill the same date on each new invoice until the data entry person move on to another date. Fun, fun, fun!

For now, I will see if invoicing will work with the member as parent. Alpha Sports Customer uses browse as a lookup and variables are beyond my skills at the moment.

Or, maybe there is some other idea.

        Thank you for the help!

The AlphaSports Customer information form is based on a single table, not a set. Selecting an entry in the browse there does move to that record (by definition). Not the same thing as selecting in a browse of a child table.

Form uses a variable (vcSearchby) to change which browse column is displayed and there is code in the onchange event for this variable as well as for the onrowchange event of the browse.

If you see a button on the form labeled Design Notes, you can get more information about what is going on.

CTRL-Shift-F copies the previous value into a field when entering a new record. (it's also under the edit menu)

It can be daunting to learn new skills when you are trying to run a business. Concentrate on getting data into digital form first and then try to learn one thing at at time - such as lookups.

              Re: Set Child Browse

Stan, you are right I can't use browse as I had originally intended. No joy on list box for me either.

The next best thing seems to be in Alpha Sports on the Invoice page, customer id has a pop up customer finder. I would like to use that to find customers. I looked in Properties, Events and even on the lookup of Customer.dbf and could not find how this pop up table or whatever it is works.

Could someone point me in the right direction please? If it is code, where is it stored? If something else, a definitive strating point would be great.

              Thank you.

Never mind. I found it on another thread. What is weird is that I thought it would be on customer table but it is not, it is on invoice header in alpha sports.

Here is the link for future generations.
