Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Update date on application startup

    Hi all..

I have activity table with tasks scheduled for specific dates.

How do I automatically update the date field on application start up so that the task shows under 'today' until completed ?

If somebody could point me in the right direction with this i'd appreciate it

(my coding's not that great so please be gentle with me)

Thanks and happy new year to all..

Re: Update date on application startup

You could create a script with an update (or whatever is wanted) operation and name it "autoexec". It will run whenever the database is first opened.

Thanks Mike - i'm a bit lost on what functions I actually use for this - presumably I can find the relevant fields by using If..Then, but how do I actually change the date ?

      Thanks again..

Re: Update date on application startup

        Steve,
Not knowing the specifics only lets me generalize....

Create an update operation via action scripting for whatever field in whatever table you are referring to, to become whatever date you are wanting. To have this update operation run on application startup, the easiest would be to create a script and call it "autoexec". Call your update operation from the autoexec script. Whenever Alpha starts up any application it checks for and runs any script named "autoexec" it finds.

If you not know how to create an operation or script, then my first suggestion is to check out the help files user manual which will show you how.

Are you referring to opening a FORM - new, eg. for today's tasks - updating the task start date field with DATE(). And thereafter that date is retained until task completed. Updating existing schedules on subsequent days will not alter the task start date?

Re: Update date on application startup

I think your problem is quite complex to manage.

            Eg:

In one of my programs I have a scheduler based on activities. The premise of the activity is that I get a warning when I start each day that it needs to be done based number of days/weeks in advance. At start up I get a list of all activities that need to be be done based on their date. They remain in the list until complete. If an activity is completed its date is updated to a the next point in time it is needed to be done.

Is this what you are trying to achieve?

              Steve,

It might help if you gave us a specific example and more details about your application. Based on your initial post I wonder why you don't have a logical "is_completed" field in your table? Your form could be "filtered" to show only records where this field is false. That way you'd see all the incompleted tasks regardless of their original "due date". Seems a lot easier to me than trying to keep rolling the tasks forward by changing their due dates each day.

Thanks to you both for your help - I've managed to do this by assigning an update operation to the relevant date field, linked to a button shown on start up

Thanks again & best wishes for 2011..
