Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Using Tablesum on an active linked table

Have gone stir crazy trying to see if this has been covered before on the forum without success.

I have a active link table (linked to an access table) which is read only.

I am trying to use tablesum on a form to return the total value of a field for a filtered set of records. It does not work! It constantly returns the same (incorrect) value regardless of the filter.

This works perfectly on a passive link table.

    Am I attempting the impossible?

Re: Using Tablesum on an active linked table

    Glen

Just created an active link to the products table from the mdb files for Alpha Sports (the MDB files are in your V10 program directory in the mdb folder. I named the active linked table Asports

I used the products table because it had a cost field that could eaisly be checked to see if the tablesum was correct.

I then created a short script in the code section of one of my test folder using the following code

    Code:
    dim chke as n
    chke=tablesum("asports","cost<1","cost")

    msgbox("",""+chke)
When you run it (using the little lightning bolt) it returned a value of 4.70 which is the total of those costs that were under a dollar. I tried it with different costs and they always returned the proper amount.

Try using the MDB of Alpha sports and use that little code snippet and see if it works for you.

I am not an expert on Active link tables - don't use them right now.
    FWIW

      Hi Tom

Thanks for that, I need to do some more testing on the mdb file I am using. The alpha sports mdb works as you say.

      Curious!

What is the filter that you are trying to use?

Also check to see that the field that your are using is populated with numbers

A variety of filters including all ".t." to dates etc. Interestingly when the active link table is created it recognises the fields as numeric (17,4) whereas the passive link table the same field is recognised as ExponentNumeric !

You can override the field definitions in both active and passive linked tables using the edit link then clicking on the override field definitions

            See the attached thumbnail.

As far as the filter - I was just grabbing at straws. I found that most times it is the filter that is causing the problem or in the case of tablesum, it could even be the last parameter which is the field that you are summing. Was just a thought.

Re: Using Tablesum on an active linked table

              Thanks Tom

I used identical filters for both the passive and active link tables so eliminated that fairly quickly. The strange thing about the filters for the active link is that no matter what the filter is it always returned the same (wrong) value!

I will overide the field definitions for the active link table but that will have to wait until tomorrow (or rather later today)

              Need sleep....

              Thanks again Tom
