Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Cannot add new record to table

    This happened overnight.
The table will not accept/ save a new record.
Will let you input the fields, but when you hit save the line just disappears, no error msg, nothing.
Tried via web, then via table form, then directly into table, nothing.
    Anyone know what's happening?

Re: Cannot add new record to table

John, if this is a web app you've posted to the wrong message board forum. Your question will get better exposure if you post to the web server forum corresponding to the version you're using, and if you provide more details.

If this is a desktop app I suggest you close Alpha Five and reboot your machine.
then open alpha and open your database. Go to the control panel. Choose tables / sets tab and right click on the table that's giving you trouble. Then open the "default form" that alpha will build for you.

If the "default form" works correctly that's a good sign the problem you're having is in your custom form. If the "default form" also misbehaves, then that's a good sign you have trouble in your field rules.

Still having problems? Furnish more details. Is the app running locally or over a network? Can other users enter records?

Re: Cannot add new record to table

I've tried several things and I do think that the field rules may be the issue.
There are a few of these pertaining to this table, is there any way I can determine which one(s)may be causing the problem?
      Thanks for your input.

Re: Cannot add new record to table

Given the small amount of information you've shared with us, about all I can suggest is that you remove all field rules and then add them back one at a time, testing as you go.

Re: Cannot add new record to table

Sorry for the lack of info.
It was down to an individual table which could not be added to, even at default form level.
I duplicated the table leaving out various options each time, e.g., indexes, records, etc.
When I left out the field rules the duplicate table started taking new records again.
Fortunately there was an option to revert to 'Prior Field Rules' on right clicking the table. I selected a version from a couple of weeks back and this resolved the issue.
Thanks Tom, your insights were spot on. it would be helpful if alpha gave an error msg when this occurred though.

If only it was known what "this" is/was.

Re: Cannot add new record to table

'This' refers of course to the problem/ issue discussed above, i.e., a specific table in the database suddenly stops taking new records, even when the record was being input via the default form on the PC where Alpha is hosted. Worse, no error msg/ warning was generated to indicate this was happening, so for example, users inputting records via the web interface had no idea their input was being 'lost' as the web interface seemed to post the record and gave a '1 record added' confirmation.
As it turned out the problem seems to have been caused by the field rules of the table in question, though there would now seem to be the added possibility that the table might have been affected by someone inputting records during a scheduled backup. Thus my point that it would help if there was some error msg/ warning generated by the software to indicate that the table was no longer taking new records. Hope that helps. Thanks all.
