Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Child List on a Report

I am trying to figure out how to do this. I know there has to be a way I am pretty sure I just am not using the right terminology in order to determine how to do it.

I need to create a summary field on a report of all parts listed for a child based on a field in a grandchild.

I have a Parent linked one to many to a Child and on the report I need to include a list of parts used from my 'parts' table for the child. The parts table is a grandchild in the set.

I know this is kind of vague but I am just looking for a point in the right direction. What I want to do is include a row in my report for each child with a field with a comma separated list of the parts from the grandchild table.

If someone can point me in the right direction to an example or the right function to use I would really appreciate it.

    Thank you in advance.

    Hi Casy,

As there could be several ways to get a result for this type of question, it is best to post a sample here.

      Hi, Casy.

Don't know of a built in function that will do this. Will be watching to see if others have better ideas. In the meantime you might look at building a custom function that creates the string (list) from scratch by opening the grandchild table, and the fetching through all the related parts one at a time. The function would build a character string that would then be used in a calc field in your report layout.

table.external_record_content_get() should allow you to collect that info. Harder to be more specific without a sample database.

        Code:
        TABLE.EXTERNAL_RECORD_CONTENT_GET( "grandchildtablename","alltrim(partnamefieldname)","partnamefieldname","grandchildlinkingfieldname ="+quote(childlinkingfieldname" ))

will yield a crlf() list. Wrap that in a strtran() to get the comma separated list. Assumes linking fields are character type.

Trickier than I thought in child-grandchild report. Trying to work up a sample.

            Stan,

I think I have it for the most part based on your first example and the sample code. I think I am just missing something for the way to finish the line off.

            If I use this:
            Code:
            strtran(TABLE.EXTERNAL_RECORD_CONTENT_GET("parts","alltrim(Parts_Number)","Parts_Number", "Parts_calid = '02142011-1007100808-14:55:57'"),crlf(),", ")
It will pull everything for the Cal_id of 02142011-1007100808-14:55:57 obviously.

The problem I am coming into is how do I finish off the code to switch 02142011-1007100808-14:55:57 with Cal_readings->Cal_ID? I know this very basic but I have been trying everything I can think of and just cannot get it to work.

Thank you again for your help and the very quick response!!!

Re: Child List on a Report

              Casy,

My first example failed because the filter for the table.external....... needed to filter the parts table for the parts related to the current order id and that order id field doesn't exist in the parts table. I wound up with two table.external.......s. The first gets a list of part id's from the orders table and the second gets the part names associated with those id's.

Better give the sample a look.

Found a way to do it with one .external..... using set.external_record_content_get()

If you're using Version 10.5 Build 3221_3583 and later

you can do the same with the *collect() function.

                  Stan,

I will have to take a look at these in the morning. I ended up having my development machine crash this afternoon.

Thank you for all of your help and I will let you know my results.

                    Casy,

One other thing to consider: you can also create a new set that looks at your tables in a totally different way, which can sometimes help; it can give you a new angle from which to approach things.
There are three kinds of people in the world: those who can count, and those who can't.

The collect function is exactly what I was looking for. Worked great.
