Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Need help to publish my first app

I have my first app nearly ready to publish. There are a couple things I still need to finish up.

    1) I want my Main Forum to be "tied" to the Alpha-5 main Window so that when you stretch or shrink the application window my main form is stretched or shrank with it. I have tried a couple ideas but have not figured it out yet. Any suggestions?

    2) How do I create a startup shortcut for my application?

    3) How do I get it to startup using the RunTime (using regular Runtime not RuntimePlus.

    Hi Marty,

    (1) Have yo looked at Anchor points in object Properties->Dimensions tab?

    (2) From the Control Panel Menu Bar select Tools-> Create Shortcut.

    (3) After you have created the Install Package which should include the Runtime (you must have that installed on you machine too). When this package is installed and run from the new machine, the application will use the Runtime.

Re: Need help to publish my first app

      Hi Marty
Some other ideas. There are multiple options.

      your point number
      2. A quick option if you do the install yourself or for quick test, is copy your whole app folder, create a shortcut on the desktop directly to the .ADB and viola. That's if you have no special loading-up instructions. Alteratively see below ** and if you need more, read the notes on creating runtimes, supplied with the installation.

      3. When you install whatever flavour A5, (if not already set) you then set the "Open with" for the .ADB to the installed A5 program in "C:\program Files\A5V... "

**To specify a start up form when you are designing your application, select File > Database Properties, select the form from the list of available forms, and then check the Run on load check box.
Design a custom menu and toolbar for the start up form. You probably do not want your application to display the default Alpha Five menus and toolbars when your application runs. To specify a custom menu and toolbar (or no menu or toolbar at all), edit the start up form, select Form > Properties, display the Menus/Toolbars tab and enter the name of the custom menu and toolbar.
Insure that when the user closes the start up form you also close the Alpha Five Runtime. If you allow the user to close your start up form, without also closing the Alpha Five Runtime itself, then the user will be left staring at the Alpha Five Control Panel. Your should insure that when the user closes the start up form, that the Alpha Five Runtime is also closed. You can do this by using the A5.CLOSE() method.

There are two handy options under database properties - see attached image.

              Peter,
              Yes, that worked. Thanks
When the application is running. How do I get rid of the tabs at the bottom of the window? See picture:

Marty, those tabs are call the "window bar" in alpha five, and you can suppress their display from the view menu.
