Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

SQL link very slow

    SQL link very slow

I have created an active link to a sql table, but it opens very slow. It takes about 20 seconds compared to opening the same table/same parameters in an Access database in a little over 2 seconds.

I am unable to use the bulk read due to many other users needing access to it. It is set as read only and no sorting performed. It is a large table

I hope this is not the norm, and it is just something i need to change.

    Re: SQL link very slow

I also use active link tables and speed depends on what I am doing.

If I create a read-only view of the table and open the linked table from the Table/Sets table in Alpha it opens and displays the first 50 records within about two seconds. If I hit the page down key, it reads them just about as fast as I can hit the key although if I try to jump to the last record in the table it start reading the records 50 at a time increasing 50 about every 1/2 second or so. The table is 420,000+ records so waiting is not an option.

If I need to access the table or any active linked table I typically use a query so only the results I need are returned. No matter what I do the read time is mmuch slower than local tables but this is to be exspected in our environment.

I know this does not help your situtation although I thought it might be good feedback for you.

        J.R.,

I didn't realize that Access also could actively link to an external table! Interesting. Wonder how Access was able to have the speed that Alpha lacks with active linked tables?

Seeing as how Alpha's active linked tables have been noted to cause slow downs, even if somehow optimized, unless you have to have basically real time updating of your data, why not use a passive linked table instead?

          Re: SQL link very slow

Mike, i use an ODBC connection to link to SQL and Oracle for the Access applications. I use a pass-through query so the calculating happens on the server, which usually results in a quick return.

I can probably get away with a passive link, but, to update it with the latest data, it has to clear the table and start all over. I tried this today and that is my conclusion, unless someone knows a better way.
Clearing the table and repopulating some of our data takes a very long time just for one table, and there are about 8 main tables that we use for our reporting.

I hope i did it wrong and someone can point me in the right direction on this.

            Re: SQL link very slow

Are you drawing only the data you need for the report? How much data is needed?

What percentage of data changes from one refresh to another?

Do you track what rows have changed or do you have a log file of the changes? If so, you retrieve only the changed rows and add/update the rows in the A5 table.

Thanks Al, i only pull the data that is needed for the report, but sometimes it is quite a bit, 200,000 records and i only pull the fields i need. record changes average about 250-500 new records per day.

I am new to Alpha so i have not figured everything out, but i would like to append only the new records instead of rebuilding the table. Each record is uniquely identified by 2 fields Date and Run so i could, once i figure out how, do a compare and append.
