Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • ERROR Enter Must begin first

My app was working fine. All I know for sure that I did was compact the data base. Now I'm getting "Enter Must begin first" Alpha5 error.

    ??

Re: ERROR Enter Must begin first

Not likely compacting has anything to do with this error.

The error message is telling you that some script is trying to assign a field value to a record when the table is not yet in enter mode.

A good first troubleshooting step is to determine if the problem lies in field rules or in your custom data entry form. To do this let Alpha build the "default form" for the table or set supporting your custom form. Run the "default form". If the error occurs now that's a good sign the problem lies in field rules. If the default form runs ok, then it's likely that the problem lies in the scripts you've written in the custom form.

Also, a search of the message board for threads discussing this specific error message will probably be helpful. The message board has already suggested a few likely threads for you. Scroll down to see them.

      Tom,

It does the same thing with the defaut form. I went through all the field rules and they seem good. Is there a way to rebuild the database from a previous version, like you can with reports?

see what right click on a form will give you on a5v10.5
(restore a form, not rebuild a database) might solve the issue

          Francis,

I just did that and lost all my built in help files. I have so much time in this, it is driving me nuts. I remembered that I did copy and paste all the files to another directory and built an install from there? This couldn't possibly have anything to do with this could it?

I got the help files back. If I go to that form (the most complicated one) in the database, even if I just click on that form (not utilize the menu) it open up with data in it. If I try to delete or cancel changes I get the frickin' error.
I'm going nuts. I don't want to recreate the entire form, it took over 2 hours to create in the first place. I've searched on this forum and cannot find any more answers to this.

Re: ERROR Enter Must begin first

Although it is not clear that the problem is your form, you could try this:
              1. Make sure you have a backup of everything.
              2. In design mode in the suspicious form, Ctrl + A and copy all the objects on the form.
              3. Switch to the Control Panel and create a new blank form on the table or set used by the suspicious one, making it big enough to take all the objects that are on the suspicious form.
              4. On the new blank form, paste in all the objects from the suspicious form.
              5. Do not close the new form, just switch back to the suspicious form and open the calculated fields window for the form (I'm betting you have some calcs), select them all and copy them.
              6. Switch back to your new form, open the calculated fields window for the new form and paste in your copied calc fields.
              7. Save the new form (naming it something new), close the old form, then see if the new form works. If it does, delete the old one and if needed rename your new one.

Now, if this does not fix the problem but you are still convinced it is the form, not field rules, you could one by one delete each calculated field both on the form display and in the calc fields definition window until you find the problem (assuming you do).

If this does not do it, I'd be more suspicious of field rules, which you could also eliminate one by one until you find the problem.

              Good luck.

I have only 1 calculated field on any of the forms. I use a few in the Reports, but only one for City, State. Zip in the form header.

After the Enter must begin First..... I will get "Unable to Save your Change"

Any more ideas anyone? ... Please...

All the buttons on the Main Menu will give me the Enter Must... error except for Backup and Restore buttons, they go to the event. Also, I have two PDF's that can be read from the main menu. It's actually getting worse, I can't even go to the entry form now.

did you make any modification on the settings of a5?

can you show us whats code on one of the button on your main form?

on my main form, i normally restrict the form in entering, editing of records.

                      Quick question...

Can I recover my database from a runtime install that is just a couple days ago...that works?

Okay, I guess you are saying my suggestion, though very quick and easy to do, wasn't worth trying?

IF SO, Thanks for letting me know that--it will be helpful for the future.

                            Raymond,

I did try your info. To no avail. I have even removed field rules one at a time. I am dead in the water here. I cannot find a solution on any searches I've used. I even downloaded the newest patch. It was from this month. What is frustrating is this database was finished and worked perfectly yesterday. I did use an installer program (freebie) to try some installs. The program was called "Install Creator". I don't think that could have done anything?

                              Ray,

To be more specific, I created an Entry2 and copied all info from entry to it. I immediatly got the error. I didn't even get a chance to do anything with it. This error is popping instantly. If even opened other forms that don't have to same fields or info and get the error. Once in awhile I'll see another quick error about 1 of my variables doesn't exist...
