Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Memo Field doesn't save

    Hi,

I created a simple Table with an Id field and a Memo field. Then I created a simple default form and entered some data into the memo field and saved everything.
Now I open the memo editor and do some text changes. I save my changes via "Save" button and can see the changes in the memo field in the form. But the "Save changes" button for this record in the form is disabled. So I loose all my changes when I navigate back and forth. This is not the expected behaviour. What's missing here?

Please post the sample database that you are showing and the build numbers of Alpha 5 that you are running..

        Works for me. Win7 10.5 3739, Build 3629
Suggest you put an action to SaveRecord on CanDepart Event and try that.
Might be a bug in the latest version, which I haven't downloaded yet.

            Hi Ted and Mike,

thanks for your testing. Both of you can save the record via F9 after you quit the memo editor via Save button? Normal editing in the memo field without launching the memo editor works perfect! Did you test with a "normal" memo field? My issue disappears when I change the memo field to rich text memo or html memo. But for my project I need the normal memo field.

Currently I run Alpha5 in a virtual machine with Win 7 Home. To make sure there is nothing wrong with this installation (it shouldn't cause I installed only Alpha5 in this VM) I installed a clean Windows XP VM and in it a new trial of Alpha5 (no patches Build 3387-3602). I found the same memo issue here! I can not save the record after quitting the memo editor.

After this I started a Windows 2008 instance in the Amazon Cloud - just to make sure ;-) Same issue here with a fresh installed A5 (Build 3387-3602): I can't save changes for a memo field but for rich memo and html memo fields.

So this can not be a problem of my installation - this must be a bug of Alpha5. Could you please verify again? Do you have any chance to try my example in a fresh installed environment?

            Thank you,

            Ray

Unless I misunderstand completely you are several patches behind.

this must be a bug of Alpha5
Which may well have been fixed in a later patch.
              There can be only one.

                Hi Stan,

as I wrote in one of my earlier posts I'm running the latest Alph5 version in my Win7 VM (Alpha 5 10.5 4091-3658.). So it looks like the issue is still there. But I'm a little bit confused that Mike and Ted didn't find any problem with my little demo!?

Raymond, I'm running build 4091_3658 on a Win7 Pro box. No cloud. No virtual machine.

your sample database behaves correctly. I open your form. I open the memo editor. I change the text. I click the editor Save tool. The memo editor closes and the form remains in change mode. I click the Save tool on the form and the changes are saved.

                  What am I missing?

Why is your testing being done in such strange environments?

                    Tom,

thank you very much for your reply! I think I found the issue now! The reported issue only comes up when the form is new and unsaved. I can't believe I didn't try this again with my own sample.

Please try these steps with my sample:

                    Create a new form
Choose default form (with all fields)
                    Choose Alpha Five Default Stylesheet
                    Press Finish
                    Change to Form View
Click the memo field to get the focus there
                    Open the memo editor
Change the text and press Save to close the memo editor
Now the Save button of the form should be disabled and you are not able to save you changes, right?

Regarding my "strange environments". I don't think it is strange to run different kind of software in virtual machines. Makes it easy for me to make sure that software bugs are not forced by other software on the same pc. Makes it also possible for me to test my programs in the os my customers uses. How do you test if all of your stuff runs on Vista, XP, 2003/2008 Server?

                    Regards,

                    Ray

Update: the bug remains also after saving the new form. It disappears only when the new form get closed and re-opened!

                      Re: Memo Field doesn't save

Ray, yes. I see the behavior you describe if I attempt to change the memo field text, using the memo editor, using a form that has not been saved.

My comment about your "strange" environments tells you more about my practice than I realized. My customers either use xp or Win7 and I have both machines available for testing. When your post did not mention any problems with a straight Win7 machine I incorrectly assumed you were getting the problem only in your other environmments. Otherwise, you would have mentioned the problem in a Win7 environment, right?

Regardless, I don't think this is a bug. I think our testing of form behaviors should always occur after we've saved the layout to disk. Otherwise we're testing in an environment our users will never see.

Ray, I won't be able to test this now until the weekend.

                          Hi Ted,

yes - with the help of you and all the others I was able to sort it out. I think it is a bug that the memo editor doesn't work until I close and re-open a form even if I saved it already.

                          Thank you for your assistance!

I have the same problem saving large blocks of text to memo fields. Sometimes it works and sometimes the memo field will just not accept the insertion of a new block of text.
This is very frustrating and represents a serious bug so far as I am concerned. Switching to Filemaker.
