Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Is there a limit in global variables?

I have dim about 48 variables in my autoexec.
    Is that a problem?

    No.
Probably limited to available memory and disk space.
    There can be only one.

In that case, is it possible the global variables may become corrupted or unusable?

Re: Is there a limit in global variables?

No more chance than the computer's memory failing. At that point any program running could fail.

You can inadvertently reuse the same variable's name in another script and assign an unintended value, dim a local or shared variable with the same name as the global. Not dim a variable global in a script and wind up referencing the wrong variable.

        Are you having some difficulty?

          Ron,

          Stan is (as usual) right.

Most use some king of self regulation on this though.

          For me:

Assign global for vars that are used through the application and need to always have the same info in them.

sample: user code for the person that opened the app as dim global user as c. or the name of the company as dim global comp as c

in a script/function for variables that will never be needed after the script has run I use local

in a session like a form with buttons that call scripts/functions use session variable

          and so on

you can put the letter g for global at the fron of each so you don't accidentally overwrite later.

It is just suggestions for cleaner code.

Yes I have a table with company name and can lookupc() or vust put in the var->comp whis is much quicker and reads a whole lot faster.

Everybody has their own way, I guess.

          Hope this helps you.

Re: Is there a limit in global variables?

            Thanks for the replies.
As Dave explain, I did the same.
Here is the reason for my posting for global problems:
After generating a button with a set of steps
            using the Alpha genie
1 blank all globals and variables used.
2 call a dialog and fill the parameters using globals.
3 manipulate the variables coming from the dialog and adding more globals to the process.
4 do a couple of reports based on those variables.
5 blank all globals and variables used.

I did a few changes during this development.

Here was the problem: the global variables were not accepting the values assigned to them sort of erratic mal-function.

After hours,s,s,s of frustration believing the problem was with my assigning, I made this post. Reading the results, I was convinced, it had to be something else.

I did convert the genie to xbasic.
I did notice that some of those erratics globals were dim in the script.

Just by chance, I question myself why. They were dim at the autoexec, why again.

I remove the dim lines and all those global variables are working fine. Over and over again.

Had any one experienced this problem?

Re: Is there a limit in global variables?

I've never seen any problem with multiple DIM statements and I frequently DIM my global variables again in the individual scripts. I do this for one or two reasons: (1) autocomplete doesn't work if the variable isn't DIMmed and (2) I used to do it as a reminder that it was a global variable. (Now I start almost all global variables with "g_".) I suppose a 3rd reason might be the use of "Option Strict" but I virtually never use that.

FWIW, I have seen problems with too many global variables but it involved hundreds of them and I'm pretty sure they were just taking up too much memory space. It seemed to take forever to just load the program and many other things in the program were also terribly slow. Cutting back on the number of global vars helped tremendously but I'm pretty sure more memory would also have helped a lot.
