Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Modal Form Previous Values

    I open up a modal form and set all of the values to individual variables. I then compare the initial values to the final values prior to saving the changed values.

    Now, is there a way in xbasic to reference the initial values on a modal form without recording all of them as variables?

    I don't think it matters what type of form you are using. The initial values are those in the table(s) upon which the form is built.

    See the wiki for .initial_value_get()
    There can be only one.

      If needed on a field by field basis;-

      The Alpha Five system variable, A_FIELD_VALUE, is useful in the CanWriteField event. Because the CanWriteField event occurs before the field value you type is actually written to the record buffer, you can use the A_FIELD_VALUE system variable in your script to refer to the value that you typed into the control. If you reference the field by name, you will access the initial value in the field before you typed in a new value.

        I am having a bit of syntax problems with .initial_value_get() . I want to check a bunch of fields so first question is can I put this on a button? If so, one field name is fuel_status how would I put this in a variable,
        I tried:
        dim test as c
        test = fuel_staus.initial_value_get()

        I put this on a button on a form but I get fuel_status not found, do I need a pointer?

          I haven't used this but my reading says you want

          test = fuel_staus.field_get().initial_value_get()
          There can be only one.

            or with a table pointer tblP

            test = tblP.field_get("fuel_status").initial_value_get()

            or you can use a number in field_get(n) and walk down the list of fields in the table.

                  This allows you to loop through the list of fields in a table and compare the initial_value() with the value_get()

                  Code:
                      init = tblP.field_get(n).initial_value_get()
                      final = tblP.field_get(n).value_get()
                      if (init <> final) then
                          field_changed = .T.
                      else
                          field_changed = .f.
                      end if
                  To see the name of the field use: tblP.field_get(n).name_get()

                  More help here..

                    Re: Modal Form Previous Values

                    This ended up working great...

                    I am still playing with it, but now i have a button that checks each field on the form by setting variables and then calling a function to check if each field is dirty and then writes to an audit file if the get value and get initial value do not match. I am very inexperienced in coding and I am sure there is a better way, but...

                    Here is the function that writes to the audit file if the values are not the same:
                    FUNCTION auditcheck AS C ( )

                    if tmptable.field_get(var->fname).initial_value_get()<>tmptable.field_get(var->fname).value_get()
                    atable.enter_begin()
                    atable.time = var->nowtime
                    atable.fieldinfo = var->finfo
                    atable.userid = var->userid1
                    atable.message = alltrim(tmptable.field_get(var->fname).initial_value_get()) +" -> " + alltrim(tmptable.field_get(var->fname).value_get())
                    atable.resnum = var->resnum1
                    atable.enter_end(.t.)
                    else
                    end if
                    END FUNCTION

                    This is the button which keeps calling the function for each field:

                    im shared resnum1 as n
                    dim shared atable as p
                    dim shared tmptable as p
                    dim shared tmptable1 as p
                    dim shared audittable as p
                    dim shared finfo as c
                    dim shared fname as c
                    dim shared nowtime as t

                    dim shared userid1 as n

                    userid1="2"

                    tmptable=table.get("res_detail")

                    atable = table.open("audit",FILE_RW_SHARED)
                    nowtime = now()
                    resnum1 = tmptable.resnum

                    fname="fuel_status"
                    finfo="Fuel Status"
                    auditcheck()

                    fname="rcar_status"
                    finfo="RCar Status"
                    auditcheck()

                    fname="lav_status"
                    finfo="Lav Status"
                    auditcheck()

                    tmptable=table.get("reservation")
                    fname="notes"
                    finfo="R Notes"
                    auditcheck()
                    atable.close()

                    This only shows 4 of the fields it checks but this works. Thanks guys for your help on this.
