Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Navision (CSide Ver.) To A5 Active Link

Serached the forum but couldn't find any Navision posts.
We have converted our accounting systems to Navision (CSide "Native" not SQL version).
When trying to create active link tables sometimes it works sometimes not.
No apparent reason, might be a 10 record table or thousands of records.
The creation says it is successful but when you try to view SOME tables it throws an error
Error loading ...Filename...:Could not execute 'count query' for ...filename....Sucess.
    See attached.

Any help much appreciated as I must code numerous reports for a custom system now imbedded within Navision.

    Thanks, John

John, just a punt, but have you got the latest ODBC driver for Navision?
    Is it a Naming issue?
Last thought, can you export from Navision to Excel and then import to Alpha to produce the reports?
    See our Hybrid Option here;

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.
You are held in a queue and I will get to you soon.

Will check on ODBC version & try Excel.
Don't see any problem with the file names.

      Thanks, John

I would work with a passive linked table for a report or use an SQL based report rather than an active linked table.

Please try either and let us know what you find.

Appreciate the reply. Strangely, passive link tables seem to convert flawlessly (at least so far).
A couple of questions if I may. Essentially I wish to utilize existing reports.
          1. What is the procedure for sets?
          2. Do you have to constantly refresh?

When I try to find "Active Link Table" in the help system there is no topic.

          Thanks again Al

Passive Linked tables are essentially native dbf so sets can be based on them.

Only when you run the report or need new data to run the report. I'd try the SQL based approach too...
How long does it take to refresh the PL tables?

I found some in the wiki. Is that where you looked?

As to sets, do you have to rebuild them after refreshing the associated tables?

Selected help and tried both local help & web help, no joy.

You suggest the SQL based approach. Pardon my ignorance but can this be utilized with A5 reporting & forms display.
Would prefer to report against live data.

              Thanks, John

No - think of a table being emptied and data appended into it. No change on the set...

                SQL Reporting - yes
forms - use active linked tables - read/write is what active link is designed for..

To build an SQL report - click report tab - new button - see this....sqlreporting.png

                    John,

Sorry I did not see this post when it came out. I have been poking around looking for something else and found this.

I am a certified Navision implementer and have lots of experience, what version are you using?
And good choice to use the Native database it is the best anywhere in the world.

Shame they want to phase it out.

                    Did you solve your issues?

                      Nicholas

Sorry for the delayed response, haven't been on the board recently.
                      Using 2009 Classic.
We have converted all our Visual Account Mate applications to Navision.
The sole remaining specialized app was written by me in A5.
Had great hopes for using A5 to update/report against Navision in active mode.
                      So far no joy.
The converted apps are unquestionably solid and certainly worthwhile.
However, as integrating the A5 app was the main reason for converting to Navision, it has proven to be an expensive and disappointing waste.

Would enjoy discussing with you if you have the time or interest.

                      John
